A small press going out of business without paying its authors...inexcusible. I wish I could say it rarely happens, but I would be lying.

Do not buy my books from Amazon or Down and Out Books directly. I will not get paid. I should get paid, as per my contract, but in an email from D&O I’ve been told ‘no further payments will be issued.’
It absolutely blows it is ending this way, but man, pay your authors what they are owed.

The repatriation of an extinct Jamaican giant galliwasp specimen from Scotland to Jamaica underscores how natural history objects, like cultural artefacts, are bound up in histories of colonisation, identity and restitution.

Word of the Day is ‘tandsmør’, from Danish. It describes bread that is buttered so thickly you can see tooth marks in it after every bite. Its literal translation? ‘Tooth butter’.

“The presence of Black seamen was especially important for stowaways. Sailors were known to stack the heavy bales of cotton in a way that created spaces where slaves could fit and to provide them with food and water during the voyage.” —Eric Foner
The Underground Railroad’s Stealth Sailors | Eric Foner
The web of Atlantic trading routes and solidarity among maritime workers, many of them Black, meant fugitive slaves’ chances of reaching freedom below deck were better than over land.

Today marks the history of Black History Month.

This year, racism is on the rise and diversity, equity and inclusion policies are under attack.

But Black History is British History.

And there is so much more for all of us to learn. This month and every month.
