“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

It costs a lot less to house people.
Finland ends homelessness and provides shelter for all in need - scoop.me
In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Why? The country applies the "Housing First" concept agains homelessness.

This was the process I went through back in the day. No way universities will be able to hire foreign academics as a result of this new EO #H-1B
ncweaver.skerry-tech.com
Why is this horrible for Universities?

Just about everyone who isn't a citizen or green card holder already who's hired for a tenure track faculty position is hired through an H1B and then, after 3-5 years, applies for a green card.

This is literally "No more foreign professors can be hired"
gergely.pragmaticengineer.com
Those on an H1B cannot return to the US from tomorrow (Sunday) unless paying $100K. This is an out-of-the blue presidential action. We’ll see software engineers stranded abroad.

One easy to predict outcome: those on US visas will travel less… for work, for conferences etc.

More rain than usual has made for a berry plentiful harvest at Pinaus Lake this season. Filling the pantry with jam made from foraged saskatoons and raspberries is pretty sweet. @paulvandonkelaar.bsky.social #cabinlife #offgrid

We at SOAR are devastated by the closure of a vital clinic. This life-saving program supported survivors in a region with extreme rates of violence. Its shutdown is deeply troubling.

In the wake of Bailey McCourt’s tragic femicide in Kelowna, SOAR co-founders met with MP Stephen Fuhr to call for urgent legal reform.

We’ve now followed up with a letter to Justice Minister Sean Fraser calling for immediate action.

✅ True! Brain injuries are common among survivors of #IntimatePartnerViolence (up to 92% of all IPV cases) because the head, face, & neck are areas most likely to be injured in an assault.

Check out the link below for more info on #braininjury and IPV:

Four days ago, Bailey McCourt was fatally attacked in Kelowna by someone wielding a hammer. Her ex-partner faces a charge of second-degree murder. The red flags were many. Little was done. Our @kmason10.bsky.social spoke to @chriswalkercbc.bsky.social about why B.C. must declare GBV an epidemic.

The fact that this type of research isn't consistently front-page news somewhere is part of the problem.

Lawyer Kim Stanton was appointed last year to independently review B.C.’s justice system. She warns that “gender-based violence has been normalized somehow, but it shouldn't be. It's pervasive, but it's preventable.”
