There is a significant amount of work going on to support care leavers and I'm happy to answer any specific questions.

Care leavers, on average, face worse health outcomes, an over representation in the criminal justice system, employment and much more despite being care leavers making a very small proportion of the public as a whole.
🫂 This morning I attended a cross council equity meeting to talk about how we integrate the decision to make care leavers as a protected characteristic in a Leeds, and deliver that through the services we deliver.
🎇 Belated Happy Diwali to everyone in Hunslet, Beeston, and Leeds City Centre and the Riverside who are celebrating from Cllr Mohammed Iqbal, Sarata Sawo and me - sadly the message didn't go out as timed yesterday!

📺 fly tipping spoils our communities and is costing the public thousands of pounds to remove, money that could be spent on other things.
...agreed to meet us next week to talk about what they intend to do to resolve the issue.

But we've also been clear, if we do not see an improvement, we reserve the right to the enforcement action which will explicitly ask for magnetic locking systems to be added to the trolley systems in Hunslet.
But as time has gone on, Cllr Mohammed Iqbal, Sarata Sawo and I have received more and more complaints about trolleys being dumped, dumped in, and used for antisocial behaviour.

Today we had a meeting with the manager responsible for trolleys across Morrisons, and they have...
🛒 Dumped Morrison trolleys are yet again becoming a nuisance around the Hunslet Housing Leeds estates.

Several years ago, we issued them with a legal notice, which resulted in the return of coin locks and proactive attempts to remove any abandoned trolley from the estates.
This will be a significant win for the private tenants living in these areas, with many likely to see significant improvement to the safety and conditions of their homes.

The extension to Hunslet is significant, with around a third of former Council properties now in private hands, many now rented out, many of their properties have long gone unchecked.
The scheme also uncovered a shocking number of cases of modern slavery, abuse, and criminal conduct that would have otherwise not been found had the council not had the power to inspect the properties in question, and were in most cases, not even known to the landlord.
Many of the tenants in those properties were already extremely vulnerable and many faced a significant power imbalance between them and their landlord when asking for repairs that were already required by law.
Some of these breaches were minor and down to simply not understanding their duties as a landlord, but many of the breaches found put tenants at significant risk of harm.
Although most private landlords do absolutely the right thing, the last scheme found 80% of inspected properties were not legally compliant in some form or another.
With such a significant number of the ward's poorest residents living in poor quality rented properties, and the huge impact this has on their health and life outcomes, this scheme is a powerful and important tool to transform the lives of many people.
