📌 Hi, I'm Patrick. I tell stories.

I make podcasts: @uepodca.st, The Long Rest (coming soon), www.noirvel.com

I dabble in game design: grimmgames.org, linktr.ee/WasteAndWild...

and I compose music, design graphics, and more.
this is hilarious
like if you told me this list was “all-time best selling discs at walmart locations” i’d be like hmm yeah makes sense

Hey Actual Play podcasters is there a desire out there to have someone else do all of noise reduction, reverb reduction and leveling on your recordings, or is that something you enjoy doing yourself?

Same goes for audio restoration work to salvage a bad recording? Like a laptop mic recording.

I have rheumatoid arthritis.

Some days I am great.

Some days I need a cane.

Some days I can't get out of bed.

I have zero control over which days fall when. I just have to wake up and see.

I'm not flaky, I just have a broken body.
free advice: don't get mad at a sick person w/ an unreliable body for not being able to do something

the sick person is probs already pretty mad at themselves (really at their body, but internalized ableism is a helluva drug) and managing a mountain of grief from all the other things they can't do

to win, and thus cement my value as a person
What, in your opinion, is the actual end goal or "purpose" of playing a TTRPG?

This is for an in-progress writing project and would really love input (via replies, quotes, and/or shares).

The funny thing I that I don't use Spotify personally so the only wrapped I have is as a creator

If I didn't have a show to record today I'd probably do a TTRPG wrapped... 🤔

2.3x new listeners (on Spotify alone) ain't bad.
Welcome to the crew, my friends.
Every day, we encourage another could-be-hero to pick up the sword, or the banjo.

Thank y'all for hanging out in 2025 🎉

I wanna compose original music for my TTRPG showrunner friends in 2026. If you want a bespoke soundtrack for your AP, hit me up and let's talk.

I don't think enough people realize that for many folks on disability they cannot risk having over a VERY low cap of money/property or they will lose their benefits nearly immediately

It often prevents folks from marrying as well it's ludicrous

It's been a while since I did one of these.

Tell me about your actual play. (Even if I already know of it)

Don't make them? Tell me what you're listening to now and why?

I think this particular wire is SO easy to cross in game design, and 5e doesn't know how to uncross it.

Is 5e a war game? Or a story game?
If it's a war game, failure should be an option.
If it's a story game, I shouldn't be fiddling with mechanical leverage to "win."
Oh, I never think death is the only challenge. I just think that in games that are combat heavy and death isn't ever a worry, then why bother with the combat at all. Just say the characters win via narration rather than rolls.

A deft feat, if I do say so myself
and some games, like say The Cunning Folk, can swing from grimdark gore porn to cartoonish goofy land and still keep its feet under it.

There's a lot of good critique in this thread (particularly about market domination being bad for everyone, always) — but several game design thoughts presuppose that "cartoonish" is bad.

And for the sake of being unnuanced on main: I disagree.
TTRPG combat could be it's own discussion, but I'm not the first person to note that D&D will let you drag a person who should be dead back with a single HP. Said player is then perfectly capable of doing anything, regardless of how injured they might be. It's cartoonish.

Narrative satisfaction is often at odds with narrative stakes, and deciding the “point” of your story early is critical
I want to be clear that there is no wrong answer here. Dimension 20 and Critical Role have famously allowed characters to defy death.
If failure occurs, what are your plans for the bad ending? How do you make the possibility of failure interesting and fulfilling for the audience and the players?

pdfs continue to be a weird compromise between digital information design (better suited to something interactive, like a website) and physical reference design (which affords notes/bookmarks/other physical tools)

I'm glad they exist too, but they're Not Great
i'm really glad pdfs of games are a thing, but my tactile brain can't really play off of one, maybe it's an adhd thing

This is literally my sole impression of Windows so maybe computers can just smell fear?
I've been a PC guy since ever and my main impression of MacBooks, mostly through work, is they have to make critical software updates about six times a week
