Anthropic threatening us with a good time.

“If every author in the class filed a claim, industry advocates warned, it would "financially ruin" the entire AI industry”

Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

It IS a monchichi. I was obsessed with monchichis as a kid, and thought exactly the same.

There’s a Tamil phrase, adopted from a comedy movie, that can be said to someone who minimises your pain but makes a big deal out of their own. The phrase is unaku vandha ratham enaku vandha thakali chutneya and it means “if you bleed, it’s blood; if I do, it’s tomato sauce.”

my statement on Ai from the mini-comic I'm making as syllabus for a new class I'm teaching this fall. It's simple, but I pretty much said all I have to say on it - it robs you of decisions and struggle - and the joy of being surprised. It robs you of learning...
a snippet of a mini-comic, at top - straight line stretches from point A to B. Immediately below, same dot at A, then becomes a curving, meandering line that winds through the page and ends at a point with rays and a question mark emanating from it. Text reads: "Nothing can do this for you - that robs you of experience and conflates answers with learning. Rather, it's all the decisions you make along the way, the mistakes, struggles, and surprises! These pathways you create - this is learning.

Signed The World Between The Rain and Painted Postcard (€15)

Marina’s dad had always said that she was someone who couldn’t help seeing doorways to other worlds where other people saw nothing at all. She’d never quite believed him but now that he's died she's not so sure. Marina's mother has strangely fallen asleep and no-one can wake her. Marina's family need her and her special powers to survive.

Donated by Susan Cahill. Delivery UK and Ireland only.

Same with The Hoax about the fake Howard Hughes memoir, the J T Leroy story, and Made You Look the NYC art forgery case, or Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos… You wonder why people don’t ask questions, but they want it to be true. Checking is waved when there’s money to be made.

“Now we’re fetishising these survival narratives — propagating the terrible idea that you can cure cancer, transcend poverty etc if you just have the right mindset and dream hard enough — or walk far enough…It gives the reader permission to ignore systematic issues or pain or injustice.”
