- Grass Roots, a half-yearly skill-capped event aimed at bringing brand new players into our regional scene. Many first-time comp players in this tournament go on further in NA comp, but some only stick around for the recurring Grass Roots events.

- Frostbite Ascent run by Frostbite, seasonal region-locked two-day major. The one I played in 2024 had 10 teams but there was a hightened focus on high production value and community building.
- Frostbite League run by Frostbite, region-locked high-level invitational with similar production quality

Other examples of OCE events:
- Oceanink Series run by Oceanink, our region-locked league. The last one had 14 teams.
- Green Sea Pickles, a bi-weekly DE Zones event in our evenings run by individual players. A successor to Zones Weekly, our region's most popular event to date.

Due to our region's size, most of our events are single recurring tournaments run by dedicated orgs if not individual players, and a greater emphasis on event quality rather than frequency. Our region's most popular events run monthly or even quarterly/halfyearly, with far more modest biweeklies.

Even my at the time monthly solo-signup draft event Lone Sailor never got more than 6 teams of 4 solo signups, but had a high player retention rate and built a lot of hype in our region particularly in lower level communities. It's gotten enough interest where I may try an NA time for more success.

My org Lone Sailor has been struggling to run events at all lately due to low signups (see @totallynottails.bsky.social's Dynamite Showdown as an individual example). Even with signups open to international players, the D5 cap and wacky time zone (6:30 pm AEDT start) make it hard to find 4+ teams.

I was writing a think piece on why Liter actually *should* be high in the meta from a backliner's perspective (who herself isn't good at Liter) but I ended up sounding like Johnny Silverhand's campaign speech in Cyberpunk 2077.

If these requirements remain unchanged, our entire region might have to move back to battlefy/challonge/startgg for our evening tournaments (6-8 pm AEDT start). I know of one high level OCE tournament that already moved to SplatNet but the Nintendo app isn’t available in all OCE countries. Not ideal

RIP all OCE tournaments? It’s difficult for us to even reach 50 monthly active players because our region is so small.

Criteria to gain: 150 monthly active players in events across last 6 months. If it drops below 100 the org loses it. I will check these every 6 months (next check in June 2026).

Do you take a long time to find X games? There might just be that few NA players compared to JP playing X in tako tbh.

Since they introduced the anonymous name update at least, I’ve only matched against one other OCE player I know, the rest are JP (which makes sense but still)
