This is why we rely on immune thresholds — yet again it’s community care. We all get vaccinated not just to protect ourselves but to protect the vulnerable around us.

But of course COVID taught us that community health is not a priority in this country.

It is important to remember when talking about this to be careful of “they deserve it” talk. There are chronically ill and disabled people who cannot safely be vaccinated. And there are infants who must be a certain age. And these infected children have no control over their parent’s choices.

So happens now is this rise measles will also create a rise in all vaccine-preventable illnesses (and other illnesses) b/c everyone who recovers will essentially be reduced to immune system infancy.

It will create a cascade of illnesses, especially in people who will refuse new vaccinations.

The thing about measles is that it’s the only known virus that triggers immune amnesia - it causes your immune system to forget everything it has previously learned. Meaning you essentially reset to zero and are now at risk of basically everything.

It can take 2-3 years to get immunities back.

Fox is blaming RFK Jr. for the measles outbreak. They promoted him, supported his nomination, and now they are turning on him. 🙄

🚨 Unarmed residents formed a human shield, demanded a warrant, and refused to move until ICE backed down.

That is what real community looks like.

This was a dinner table conversation between my 2 kids in middle school--comparing notes on which room would be best to be in when the shooting started, how they would escape various rooms, etc. I've told them about my school, pre-Columbine/lockdown drills, and it's unfathomable to them.
I teach Sociology of Childhood, and when we talk about school shootings, my students tell me about how they also do these checks in their classes--noting locks on doors, thinking about how to escape and where to hide. I hate that they have to mind those risks while trying to learn.
Each semester I go in my classroom and I try to figure out what we would use to block the doors, if it would be safe to crawl out the windows, where we could hide if there was a mass shooter in campus. It’s such an indictment of this country how we have normalized these preventable tragedies.

WOW. @haleaziz.bsky.social with a new scoop: ICE now gets a running list of every person who is going to be taking a domestic flight inside the United States from the TSA and runs it through their database looking for targets. This explains the Babson College student's arrest.

This is an insane proposal, which has to be taken serious anyway, as that is the time and place we live in.

Expect similar plans to be discussed in GOP-controlled states soon (in my state higher teaching loads have been pushed by some Republicans for a while).

A new investigation revealed that school districts and local governments are reportedly overpaying for supplies because of Amazon contracts that bind them to dynamic pricing.

Rather than allow for competitive bidding, the deals “covertly raise prices and inflate costs for governments.”
