Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier was born #OTD in 1768. Among his many contributions was the idea, first presented in "Théorie analytique de la chaleur" (1822), that functions on a finite interval (subject to conditions described by Dirichlet) can be expressed as a sum of sine waves.
