99% of preprints I read are in journal manuscript submission format:

Figures at the end instead of integrated in the text, legends often seperately at the very end.

Very clunky to read, do your peers who care about your science a favor and make preprints readable - it will be much appreciated!
philippdexheimer.bsky.social
Fun fact: BioRxiv preprints have no formatting requirements - you can actually make your manuscript look nice before uploading it

In labs around the world scientists are growing miniature versions of human organs in a petridish - Microengineering meets biology at the organoid frontier!

In the end the real intelligence test is whether you get out of life what you want!

If you love doing something and are willing to put in the work there's always a way!

It will be a tough start, there will be substantial recurring doubts, and you're in it for loads of unanticipated challenges. But the feeling of having set up yourself professionally is out of this world!
philippdexheimer.bsky.social
Now I'm happy to say that none of my worries beacme reality, and that it has been an incredible ride so far.

The feeling of manifesting a very personal career path born in your own head is absolutely amazing!
philippdexheimer.bsky.social
Loads of concerns crossed my mind, making the decision very difficult.

Eventually I took the leap, and got lots of encouragement from friends & colleagues for which I will be forever grateful - Lot's of love to everyone who supported me on the way 🙏

That's when the idea to give freelancing a try was born and I decided go all-in with the Science Art. But boy, I was scared:

What if it doesn't work out?
What if people don't like my work?
What if I end up broke & messed up my career?
philippdexheimer.bsky.social
Back then I've been dabbling In Science Art for a couple of years already, however, it didn't occur to me to turn this into my full-time job.

Instead there was a vague idea to go into Biotech, but none of the job ads got me really excited.

During that second Postdoc year my mental state deteriorated and I was quite a mess at the end.

My job situation became an ever-increasing burden: if you have no plan for where to go you can paddle as hard as you want without progressing.
philippdexheimer.bsky.social
Ironically, my project went rather well and I got emotionally attached to it.

One year passed and I aimed to wrap up within 6 months, but things didn't go as anticipated - the paper isn't out to this day lol.
philippdexheimer.bsky.social
So I started a bridge Postdoc and gave myself one year to figure out a plan.

My goal was to just have a good time in the lab before moving on. I didn't aim at all for that high-impact paper which would land me a PI position at a prestigious Institute.

After my PhD I didn't quite know what to do with my life.

I loved Science & the lab, but the classic academic career path didn't feel like a good fit for my future.
philippdexheimer.bsky.social
Thinking about switching from Academia to Science Freelancing?

Here's my story of going from a struggling Postdoc to living my passion as a Science Artist:

I had the pleasure of talking about Science, Art & Creativity with Kenan Kraković in the most recent episode of his podcast. We had a blast chatting, so if these topics interest you check it out 👇

1/23 Big news for the #ObenaufLab! So excited to finally share our new study providing another puzzle piece, why immunotherapy fails in many tumors, now out in @Nature 🧵👇 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Spraypaint on concrete - Vienna

I got to investigate Biology using these little fellas for 9 years in the lab and still love em, what a simplistic beauty of an organism

Hello bluesky #sciart! Today is as good a day as any to start something new and positive.

My name is Son (short for Sonhita) and I'm a Toronto-based scientist, artist and #sciartist. I love using bright colours and bold shapes to paint cells and biological system.

Here is some of my recent works

Time for an new intro under these skies 🔵
I’m a molecular biologist (currently postdoc-ing at EMBL) & also a science illustrator - taking your scientific discoveries and turning them into unconventional, colourful and creative illustrations! ✨ #sciart #scicomm

A black and white pencil drawing inspired by Escher’s drawing hands in which the hands emerge from a nucleosome structure A blue/purple drawing of the interior of a cathedral, with light shining through the glass panes and projecting a DNA shape on the floor Drawing of a gloved hand of a scientist holding a purple spark, on grey background A watercolour drawing of a water landscape surrounded by mountains with a cell jumping on the water like a skipping stone

Cheers Kathrin! The crystal structure of I think a yeast Ribosome served as a basis. Styletransfer was done using Magnific and Gustav Klimt paintings, then I went to Photoshop for polishing

As a start there's skybridge, a chrome / firefox plugin that automatically finds Bluesky accounts from your follow(er) list in Twitter and offers a one-click solution to connect with them all here.

Just used it today, saved me an hour of work
