1. Track down suspects (ALL the stakeouts)
2. Not get caught by the bad guy
3. Oh yeah, travel back in time

Melting back into the crowd, I watch as the mayor pulls back a velvet sheet to reveal a bench in the courtyard, complete with a plaque in Adelaide’s honor. Well-wishers decorate the bench and its surrounding area with flowers, signs, and stuffed animals. It may as well be her tombstone.

She’s sounding more hysterical with every word.

Screw it. If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.

“I’m going back in time to save Adelaide. I know that doesn’t make sense to you, Mom, but this is really happening and I need you to chill for a minute while I take care of things.”

“I do not have a boyfriend,” I blurt out. “Not even close.”

“Despite your best intentions,” Avery singsongs.

Mom’s spoon clinks on her bowl. “Is that true, Zu-Zu?”

“No! There’s no one.”

“Jayden Lundberg is not a ‘no one,’” Avery muses. “He’s actually semi-popular.”

"What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done?”

He grimaces. “So much for beating around the bush. Hmm...well, I stole a candy bar when I was like four.”

I hold up my index finger. “That doesn’t count. Every kid does that. It’s like a rite of passage.”

“I’m serious.”

“So am I,” he insists, tugging the sweatshirt drawstrings so the hood cinches. He may as well be pulling on my heartstrings. Ugh, this is so messy. Even if I didn’t have the strictest mom known to man, I can’t start a relationship just to up and leave the state.

His hand covers mine, pressing it to his chest, while he leans in for a kiss. It’s sweet and playful, filling my mouth with the taste of dark chocolate. I tangle my free hand in his curls, trapping him in place while his fingers tease the skin along my lower back.

I flip the light switch, plunging the room into pitch darkness before painting it red with the safe light. The printing process is easier this time around, now that I've done it twice. Developer, stop bath, fix, rinse.
