Pathways winding through the park offered cover... He paused in the stillness. The shade thickened around him, mingling with the salt of the sea. He listened for any sign of pursuit. Every whisper, every flicker, every breeze was empty.
Standing by the seawall, Cord felt his heart begin to sink. Every unspoken word took shape, a specter of the life unlived. He mourned the future in fragments, moments folding inward and vanishing into silence. It was a story that was lost. And with it, a part of himself. The ocean swelled, crashing against the rocks before subsiding. The sun crept through the clouds behind him, its soft light glistening in the spray as he stood beside the trees. A gull soared overhead. He had to get off this island. A figure stepped from the distant tree line, just at the edge of his vision. Adrenaline surged, sharp and metallic on his tongue. He had mistaken comfort for safety. Was it her? Tracking him? Hunting him? He didn’t wait for answers to catch up. Survival demanded evasion over certainty. Pathways winding through the park offered cover. Cord kept to the deepest shadows beneath the trees, each step deliberate. He paused in the stillness. The shade thickened around him, mingling with the salt of the sea. He listened for any sign of pursuit. Every whisper, every flicker, every breeze was empty. He found himself wishing he had practiced with the neurostatic band on his wrist. His fingers brushed the smooth black surface, a gift of secret defense. But what else did it hide? A tracking chip, maybe. That would be easy enough. He took a slow breath and slipped it off for the first time since arriving. His mind reshuffled the list. Who would have known, could have known, might have known? Whoever remained was now his safest bet. He calculated the space and the schedule with precision and care. Then, without a sound, he moved deeper into the dark. The bracelet remained in the shade, waiting to be found.
