Yes, I know, yet another #GivingTuesday post, but I hope you'll brave whatever the weather ends up being and come see us today. 10% of sales after noon will be donate to 5 local organizations doing important work in our community.
Giving Tuesday
We know this year, for many different reasons, members of our community are having to make difficult decisions about where to spend their often increasingly limited money, wanting to support the causes that matter to them and the people in their lives that matter to them. We hope our Giving Tuesday program will make it a little easier for you by giving you a chance to do several things at once with the same spending; getting a great gift for someone you care about, supporting organizations doing great work in your community, and keeping your local fiercely independent bookstore going.

This cross-pollination IS how new ideas happen. EVERY field needs humanistic thinking, that's why they call PhDs "Doctors of Philosophy"

Keep the requests coming, but I might just hype some other books I love, too. I mean, who's going to stop me? By treating childcare as worthy of the deep thought of literature The Long Form is revolutionary. Also just deeply wise portersquarebooks.com/book/9781948...

Did you know there is a mystery series featuring Abigail Adams? Anyway the one by Woody Holton seems to be definitive: portersquarebooks.com/book/9781416... but I also want to give nod to Cokie Roberts's Founding Mothers portersquarebooks.com/book/9780060...
Can you recommend a good biography of Abigail Adams?

OK #BookSky I've got to convince a toddler to take a nap, but then I'll be back to get through all your recommendation requests!

Great suggestions. Shop small and indie!
We know that, for a ton of reasons, a lot of folks don't have as much to spend as they'd like this holiday season. Sooooooo, here's a thread of things you can do that will support your local indie bookstore or other business WITHOUT spending any more than you intended...

I wouldn't leave them unsupervised with this, but this book from Make Magazine could be a lot of fun! portersquarebooks.com/book/9780596...
Any thoughts for a middle-high schooler starting an interest in chemistry? Maybe with home-friendly experiments? He's looking toward nuclear chemistry eventually, but hasn't had h.s. calc or physics yet.

And now here's our big old thread of nonfiction! Winner of the National Book Award, if the world could be saved by a journalist's razor sharp precision & a novelist's sense of style & narrative alone, El Akkad would not have had to write this book. But he did. And we need to read it.
One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This
On October 25, 2023, after just three weeks of the bombardment of Gaza, Omar El Akkad put out a tweet: “One day, when it’s safe, when there’s no personal downside to calling a thing what it is, when it’s too late to hold anyone accountable, everyone will have always been against this.” This tweet has been viewed more than 10 million times.

Jane Harper's The Dry is one we recommend for place-centric mysteries: portersquarebooks.com/book/9781250... but if that also seems too dark, there's Donna Leon's series in Venice! portersquarebooks.com/book/9780060...

And now a few #SciFi & #Fantasy for #BlueSkyMonday! At a rare hinge between sci fi & historical fiction, Beings by @ilanaslightly.bsky.socia uses alien abductions, self-discovery, and archives to ask if we can ever really know the story of another person.
Beings by Ilana Masad
“The alien abduction meets lesbian yearning novel that will restore your faith in the universe. Ilana Masad excavates the juiciness of historical archives and the otherworldly mysteries of the everyday in her most brilliant work yet.” –Ruth Madievsky, author of All-Night Pharmacy

Elizabeth George doesn't! But if you want a classic that should fit the bill try The Franchise Affair portersquarebooks.com/book/9780684... or something new & a little different The Murder of Mr. Ma: portersquarebooks.com/book/9781641...
I’m looking for a book for someone who enjoyed (and finished) the Inspector Linley mysteries. Does Elizabeth George have another series you’d recommend next?

Now some #BlueSkyMonday #CyberMonday recommendations for the mystery/crime readers of #BookSky The Museum Detective is a really smart, mystery that starts with archaeological fraud, but connects to organized crime, patriarchy, & the costs & rewards of forging your own path, plus a satisfying twist
The Museum Detective
Inspired by a real-life antiquities scandal in Pakistan, this gripping series debut introduces archaeologist Dr. Gul Delani, whose investigation into the discovery of a mummy gets complicated—and personal—when it collides with her years-long search for a missing family member.
