Consider the context:1933 Laureate PaulDirac-one of the founders of quantum physics, is reported to have claimed at his AwardCeremony that there would be no use of his discovery!!
SurpriseSurprise..but he was a theorist after all-that response of his has certainly been proved wrong(2/2) #nobelprize

So now the special UCBerkeley 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐭 will be Professor John Clarke's!!! (The special perk that UCB offers its Nobel Laureates..😝😝😝)
Bringing a quantum physical effect into the macroscopic world in the laboratory, which has then lead on to it coming into our everyday, is no mean feat! (1/2)

The aurora of May 31/June 1, 2025, looking straight up in a 360º pano, with the horizon all around and the zenith at centre. This records the entire sky during the peak of the substorm at about 1:30 am with the curtains converging at the magnetic zenith, which is south of (below) the true zenith.
The great aurora of May 31/June 1, 2025, here looking straight up in a 360º panorama, with the horizon all around and the zenith at centre. This records the entire sky during the peak of the substorm at about 1:30 am with the curtains lighting up with a range of colours blending together, and converging at the magnetic zenith, which is south of (below here) the true zenith. South is at bottom here, and north at the top, with east at left and west at right.

The Kp Index peaked at Kp8 this night.

Another camera is at work at bottom shooting a time-lapse with a fish-eye lens. The stars of Scorpius are at bottom low on the southern horizon and in the only part of the sky free of aurora, sort of!

Technical:
A stitch of 8 segments, 45º apart, each a 5-second exposure taken in rapid succession, with the Viltrox 16mm rectilinear lens at f/1.8 on the Nikon Z6III at ISO 800, and in portrait orientation. Stitched with PTGui which annoyingly strips the image of some key metadata. But it does a fine job blending images in a difficult subject like this with content changing from segment to segment.

From @noirlabastro.bsky.social: It’s day 3 of Black Hole Week! ✨ We’re highlighting the Gemini Observatory, operated by NSF NOIRLab. Gemini North found the closest black hole to 🌎, 10x more massive than the ☀️. Go to noirlab.edu/public/produ..., print, and enjoy! #astronomy

Imagine! A Dark Sky protector advocating from Dubai, no less!!! Just like amidst the darkest of darkness a bright spot can always be found, "amidst the brightest of areas Dark Sky Defenders can be found..." so says the protector.... @astro @astronomy @astrophotography

My 2nd post in this thread vanished!
It had information on a free app by Astro enthusiasts in India called Zero Shadow Day that gives you the date and time of Zero Shadow Noon for any location.... @astro #astro #astronomy
The free app Zero Shadow Day

And Hawaii certainly always done its bit - and will again in May....they have given it a beautiful (and accurate) name besides, viz. Lahaina Noon
....[We should call it Zero Shadow Noon rather than Zero Shadow Day...]

Reports of Lahaina Noon - aka zero shado noon in Hawaii

But astro enthusiasts here in India have created a Zero Shadow Day app no less...(2/4) #astro #astronomy
Zero Shadow Day app available on Google Play

It was the ZERO SHADOW moment in my town! Lucky to be within ±23° lattitude!!.... [This moment doesnt get much publicity globally - because its only us tropics people that see it -most twitterrati are clearly outside this zone!😜😜] (1/4) #astro #astronomy @fcain.universetoday.com @starstryder.space
Waiting for the moment with things "vertical" set up on a terrace.... And then the moment of zero shadow!
