Vinland Saga's final chapter 220 is 28 pages and releases on Friday, July 25th in Japan. Due to a national holiday this week, the delivery of the magazine was delayed, resulting in us getting it much later than usual.

We don't know when we'll release our translation, but expect some delay.

Since we've been seeing so much rumors, discussion and misinformation the past week: a note on Vinland Saga "ending" this month.

tl;dr: we simply do not know if it's ending this mont and will have to wait for the next issue of Afternoon or an official announcement.

I'll say it over and over.

I do not believe in gate keeping.

I do not believe in pulling up the ladder.

I believe in kicking the wall down like the Kool-Aid man, and making room as I go for those who come next.

Just because it was hard for me, doesn't mean it has to be hard for anyone else.

Hi everyone,

Most of you have already noticed that there’s been a lot of rumors and speculation about Vinland Saga supposedly “officially ending” this month.
I’ve been seeing an enormous amount of misinformation being spread, so
I wanted to set the record straight on where this is coming from.

Wednesday June 11th, Twitter user twi_yon posted an announcement for an upcoming symposium held at the Rikkyo University on Saturday July 19th. The symposium will be on “Narrating, analysing and Portraying the Middle Ages: From Medieval Icelanding Literature to Contemporary Japanese Historical Creation”. At this symposium, two authors are invited to speak: Makoto Yukimura of “Vinland Saga” and Sato Futaba of “Anna Komnene.”

In this tweet, the announcement specifies that these authors will talk about their respective work “now that both have published their final chapter.” The word that is used here is “最終回” which specifically refers to a series’ final episode or chapter. It cannot be interpreted any other way, as some people have assumed it to be “final arc.” Seeing that Anna Komnene’s final chapter was published last year and its final volume released in February, one can only take from this that Vinland Saga will finish before this symposium is being held on July 19th.

There is only a single issue of Afternoon published before the symposium, the August one published on June 25th. This would mean that Vinland Saga will end with chapter 220. Yet, we’ve seen no announcement in the previous issue of Afternoon. So how likely is this? Usually, a popular series like Vinland Saga will get some fanfare for its final chapter. An announcement for readers to look forward to the finale, a color page and sometimes even a cover feature. Yet, we have none of that for the next issue of Afternoon.

We already know that “When the Dokudami Flowers Bloom” will be on the cover of the next Afternoon issue, as shown in the next issue preview. The only mention of Vinland Saga in there is being listed as a previous winner of a manga award, nothing else.

But does a manga ending always get some fanfare? We can look at Issak for reference, as it ended last issue in Afternoon. No cover, no color page. What about an announcement? Here is the next issue preview for the issue where Issak published its final chapter:

Can you spot it? It’s riiiight there. (Only a very small part notes that Issak is actually ending.)

Seeing that Yukimura-sensei has taken a lot of unannounced hiatuses due to missed deadlines the past year, I can understand that the editorial department didn’t want to risk putting an announcement in the magazine for the series ending if they weren’t sure Yukimura-sensei would be able to publish the chapter for sure.

To summarize all of this: we simply do not know if Vinland Saga is ending this month, but it is possible. There is a chance the symposium announcement made a mistake and that the series won’t have ended then. We ca only wait and see. Of course, we will keep everyone updated.

Update on Akatsuki no Yona Chapter 270: we have another delay. The draft and typesetting processes are finished, which just leaves the final proofreading and quality check. We hope to finish that by tomorrow. Thanks for your patience!
