New research out in @conphysjournal.bsky.social We use RNA sequencing to identify gill markers for food deprivation in Chinook salmon.

We will deploy these markers with panels for other stressors and pathogens to evaluate impacts on survival of wild salmon

Yukon River salmon have hit historic lows. New status assessments from PSF highlight where they are most at risk. Out of 20 Conservation Units – genetically and ecologically unique salmon groups – 16 are struggling and 4 are data deficient.

#DYK Yukon Chinook have seen significant changes to their genetic makeup? Returning fish are now younger, about 10% smaller than pre-1990 levels, and disproportionately male, with females producing 16% fewer eggs as a result. Stay tuned for new data on all Yukon salmon soon.
