Last week, EPIC joined a coalition of civil society groups led by @publicknowledge.bsky.social urging the FCC to safeguard the privacy of NextGen TV users. This new version of over-the-air antenna TV, also called ATSC 3.0, allows broadcasters to collect user data like streaming media services do.

Congress claimed it was passing the "TikTok ban" bill to protect American data privacy, but the results from last week's deal to save the US version of the short-form video app show anything but. Read the latest from @publicknowledge.bsky.social Director of Government Affairs Sara Collins:
Congress Picked a Fight With TikTok When It Should Have Fixed Tech Policy
Congress' bipartisan mobilization for the so-called "TikTok ban" was a missed opportunity for American data privacy.

Although @publicknowledge.bsky.social believes outright repeal of #Section230 is the wrong move, that doesn't mean we think it's perfect or untouchable. While Section 230 shields platforms from liability for hosting third-party speech & allows for content moderation without fear of lawsuits…

Calls from congressional leaders to repeal #Section230 aren't new – and Public Knowledge's position isn't either. Back in 2024, @housecommerce.bsky.social introduced legislation to "sunset" the law by the end of 2025, which would have had serious consequences for our free expression online.

#Section230 is both one of the most important and most misunderstood pieces of legislation that affect the internet. As its 30th birthday approaches, read the breakdown from @bergmayer.net on what exactly this law does – and why repeal is the wrong approach.

There is a lot to learn from Wikimedia's approach to AI training. Information should be free, but that doesn't mean there is no cost to providing it!

Beyond just rent-seeking, there are business models to be found in providing quality access that creates a win-win.

The beneficiaries won’t be consumers, but large wireless companies that want to keep people locked into their plans.

A free press cannot function if the government is able to exercise veto power over critical reporting simply by refusing to engage.

During questioning, FCC Chair Brendan Carr was asked whether the FCC is an independent agency. Sen. Luján specifically cited the FCC website calling it “independent.”

I took a screenshot of the site at 11:54 am

I took another at 12:22 pm and the word “independent” was gone.

Senator Schatz did a phenomal job driving home Chair Carr's blatant hypocrisy in how he applies the "public interest standard", asks whether Carr would threaten a conservative comedian's political satire in the same way. Schatz does not let Carr's attempts at trolling land at all. Fantastic work.
