Rupert Murdoch owns this rag. They'd be doing this even if the guy stood up 10 seconds into the song. Rupert Murdoch's media hacked the phone of a little girl who'd been kidnapped and murdered, leading police and her mother and father to believe she was still alive. Murdoch has done worse than this.

Jorge Ruiz’s blood alcohol level was far below the legal threshold for intoxication.

When his lawyers looked at similar car crash cases, they found that although Ruiz had the lowest amount of alcohol in his system, his sentence was by far the longest.

➡️ Full story: https://propub.li/3KDEql5
Article excerpt reads: Then it was Ruiz’s turn. He spoke for the first time in court.

“I want to say that I am sorry to the family,” Ruiz said. “I wouldn’t have wished for this to happen. I wish that this would have only been a dream.”

Lewis peered down from the bench at Ruiz.

“This is America,” Lewis said. “It’s the greatest country in the world and we have the right to trial in this country. I would never penalize you for exercising that right, but Mr. Lively talked about acceptance of responsibility, contrition, remorse. I haven’t seen any of that from you.”

He sentenced Ruiz to the maximum possible punishment, longer even than the 50 years requested by prosecutors: 99 years.

The court went quiet. Even the prosecutor was shocked.

Years later, Robinson remembered that moment. “That was not something that I had expected,” he said.

Genuine question: for those enthusiastically pushing AI tools into every part of our education system—what checks/guardrails are there around algorithmic biases like this?

A Senate report has found that “a lack of trust” and “an abuse of processes” lie at the heart of the governance failures in Australia’s universities, writes Tim Moore. What’s needed, it says, is “less stacking of corporate appointees” on university councils. satpa.pe/Hjjd7B5

Per CDC source: At internal leadership meeting this afternoon, it was shared that 1,257 people were RIF'd at CDC. Number may not be final. Apparently, chief of staff was unaware that RIFs were going to occur so not clear who is making decisions. (Short 🧵)

Well, guess what? Yesterday Putin batted his eyelashes at Trump (and Melania) and the first couple were grateful for the love and attention. People need to accept the reality that Trump will always crave Putin's affections and cares not a whit for Ukraine. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.
