New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

Thompson said in a statement “Mobile Fortify is a dangerous tool in the hands of ICE, and it puts American citizens at risk of detention and even deportation.” He also said “ICE officials have told us that an apparent biometric match by Mobile Fortify is a ‘definitive’ determination of a person’s status and that an ICE officer may ignore evidence of American citizenship—including a birth certificate—if the app says the person is an alien. ICE using a mobile biometrics app in ways its developers at CBP never intended or tested is a frightening, repugnant, and unconstitutional attack on Americans’ rights and freedoms.”

This narrative isn't true though, he's a rich kid lol.

He did not need to sign up for college, and he's explicitly stated his sign up was because he wanted to have fun/play soldier, in two separate interviews

On top of that, he could have chosen any MOS that wasn't infantry, and sought it.

He protested the Iraq War before he enlisted in it. When I ask about the apparent contradiction, he shrugs: "I thought I could do some good. And I wanted to play soldier. I might have read too much Hemingway."

From the age of two, Platner wanted to become a soldier. "I loved military history. I loved war films. I loved playing in war. 1 was a Civil War reenactor," he says. What made him unique was that he was protesting the Iraq War before enlisting in the Marine Corps. "I did my best to stop it. I got thrown out of a George W. Bush rally in Bangor in 2002, for holding up a sign that said 'No War in Iraq.
"When the war came," he continues, "I also felt that it was my duty as an American to go. I also felt some kind of like, you know, just like that weird draw that young people get towards adventure. And this was going to be my generation's war. I felt like I had to take part. I also believed then-I don't believe this anymore-that, like, if I went into it with some kind of cynicism, that I would be able to do good things inside of a larger failed policy. And while that is true, that doesn't change the larger failed policy or failed strategy."
