the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

not in any way blaming bit brigade, but that last sentence clause here feels inappropriate, considering that many other artists would gladly and voluntarily design their sets around the theme. bit brigade in no way has a monopoly over that nor should anyone. you either do it or your don’t
magfest.org
However, we've since updated that page with the guidelines that are in line with our internal policies over the last few years. We're genuinely sorry about the confusion. Bit Brigade is the only exception to this rule this year, and we're extremely excited to hear their new MMX set!

well this brings up another point, then. the theme usually isn't announced beforehand, so what influences these decisions? performers usually don't base their entire set on one thing (excluding groups like Metroid Metal, who also played consecutive years based on MAGFest theming)

Like, I understand there aren't really a lot of winning plays right now; you can't un-book Bit Brigade, this isn't their fault and they should not be blamed for people wanting to see them.

But a lot of people who are really important to Magfest are very upset and there's real damage being done here

can't wait to see this back!

I am excited to hear what fun things you have cookin up

I know that MAG staff is seeing the comments because they deleted this and reposted it ~12 hours later (without fixing the typo you pointed out). we just want magfest to clarify what their policy is on this, because from the outside, it looks really unfair to everyone who's been applying to perform

Also very telling about the status of MAG is how so many people in my DMs are basically like "I'm afraid if I say this publicly I won't ever get booked" which is just beyond fucked. If MAG would pass on someone due to totally valid criticism then MAG needs better people.

once again, my issue is not with the band, it's when organizations claim to follow artistic values and inclusion (this is definitely not my first rodeo) and don't. if it's not the policy anymore, then delete it.

at least respect the acts enough to spell their names correctly the second time, damn
pvbaudio.bsky.social
I'm dum and just realized you pointed this out in the original post, but

yike
pvbaudio.bsky.social
lmao they didn't even fix the spelling of bit brigade!!!!

if you're ever worried about your artwork not being good enough or whatever, I just sold this to someone. you can do it.
pvbaudio.bsky.social
case in point! that breaks my heart because you're awesome and I would love to see you have a chance to perform up there with your own group. but I get it!
pvbaudio.bsky.social
no shade to the band at all. but seeing MAGFest's policy of "no year to year booking" while booking the same band three years in a row is really discouraging for artists who are being told that they will have a chance
