Christmas comes and goes, years pass, things change. Yet memories made as a child linger on. That little train...no matter how many years go by, no matter how hard time tries to fade and distort our imagination and our emotions, no matter how jaded, the little train remains the same.
Christmas comes and goes, years pass, time marches on. Yet memories made as a child linger on. From one Christmas to the next, no matter where I am, the sound of the train rattling under the tree, and I'm a kid again. That little train...no matter how many years go by, no matter how hard time tries to fade and distort our imagination and our emotions, no matter how jaded, the little train remains the same. I received my first toy train set when I was 4 years old. It was a late 1960s Marx "Allstate" set that my Grandfather gave me to run under the tree. I still have that set, and although it no longer runs under the tree, it began a lifelong tradition, and lifelong love for these antique toys. The trains in this photo were issued by Lionel in 1936 and 1940, and when I moved to NC in 2010, they came along for the ride. That first Christmas away from my family, in an unfamiliar area, with no job, few friends, and no change in sight, was incredibly hard on me. But I was determined, with God's help, I would make it. At night, when the apartment was quiet...there was the train under the tree. There came the memories, and the calming reassurance that even though I was alone, everything was going to be alright. Even now, so many years later, as I sit alone in the dark living room missing my family, the trains still rattle under the tree, and I'm right back there with them, in the little house in Florida, smelling the turkey cooking, and the pies baking. My Grandparents are alive again, the smell of pine mixing in along with the sweet cedar smoke of the toy locomotive. The warmth of the fire is felt, the sweet sounds of the carolers singing outside are heard. The sounds of rustling paper as gifts are opened, laughter and excitement, idle conversation, and just enjoying each others company. And even then...no matter what, just for that moment...everything is OK. The world no longer exists as it is, but as I wish it were still. That's the magic of the Christmas Tree Train.

One last batch before I close the bakery for the year! My grandparents, aunts & uncles all used to get together after Thanksgiving and bake cookies and bread from scratch. We'd then give them to friends, neighbors, and folks at church, so I'm doing what I can to keep the tradition going.

This composition had eluded me for nearly a decade, but yesterday I was finally able to capture it. A train rolled through just as the Duquesne Incline was crossing over the tracks in #Pittsburgh, creating a picture perfect winter scene. It was worth the hours and hours I've waited over the years.
