Captain Diunikel's Salvage Service was initially drafted in 2019 in collaboration with GPT-2. It wasn't clear at that point how toxic LLMs were, and I thought it was cute to work on an AI servitor story with an AI servitor assistant. I haven't touched it in six years in part because of this. (1/4)

The thing to understand about "age verification" laws is that they are not just for kids
The only way to "stop kids from doing xyz online" using age-gating is to demand a government ID (or invasive biometric face scan) from EVERYONE.

I'm listening to The Ethical Slut as a palate cleanser after listening through the complete works of Schopenhauer. I've already read this book (I keep it on the shelf behind where I do all my writing), and I'm just fond of it.

Schopenhauer wrote a lot of really trollish stuff. I think if he were alive today, he'd be a totally obnoxious bitter loser abusing people online with the full backing of a conviction in his superior intelligence.

Completed another draft. Book five in the Kura and Kaire series. It's very philosophical, and very different from the preceding books, and in general this is my least promising series... so why have I written so much on it? Tch. It should properly be done now. I'll work on something else next.

I lectured my subconscious about the emotional repercussions of experiencing helplessness and I mostly stopped having dreams where I was helpless. This follows a pattern over the years of "I lectured my subconscious about X and those dreams stopped".

I had a fun dream last night about playing a strategy game with hero units playing with RPG mechanics on the same map. It was set in the Digimon universe with mechanics similar to Age of Empires for the strategy portion. The best transport units were blimps!

Suffered insomnia. I'm wide awake much earlier than usual. I did intend to wake up early this morning. The last hour in bed was really pleasant, at least. I woke up slowly and comfortably, just after not as much sleep as is ideal.

Because you can't tell fact from fiction, and the fiction - stuff that DIDN'T ACTUALLY HAPPEN - is getting more attention and blowback than actual criminal actions taken by people in positions of power, documented every damn day in the news.

I have a fundamental disagreement with many philosophers who assert that longing is suffering. Without longing, I think there is ultimately no joy. Suffering in the absence of something should be held distinct from longing for something, which is the drive to attain it, which is not unpleasurable.
