A few years ago I interviewed screenwriter Daryl Henry for a TCM article about his film The Crazy World of Julius Vrooder (1974). He was such a delight and even sent me behind-the-scenes photos from the film including this one of him on set. I just learned he passed away this July. Godspeed.

My favorite Criterion Closet videos are the ones with directors talking about other directors' work. I loved this one with Luca Guadagnino especially when he talked about the "invisible hand of violence over women" in Catherine Breillat's Fat Girl (2001). www.youtube.com/watch?v=fodK... #filmsky

Watched Pablo Larrain's The Club (2015) yesterday and I am not well. It's so deeply disturbing and as a dog enthusiast I wished I had just skipped this one.

I'm a scaredy cat but I'm really curious about this one.

For a split second I thought I was looking at a picture of Jonathan Brandis.

Definitely not common amongst middle-class or working women. I thought of this while watching Mad Men and I noticed that the working women wore clip ons and the wealthy women of leisure had pierced ears.

There is a correlation between clip-on earrings and women working jobs as secretaries and phone operators in the '50s and '60s. Easy to slip off and on. The pain of wearing an earring with a backing on the phone is excruciating. Clip-ons meant you could be functional & stylish.

I can't stop thinking about this blouse that Miranda July wears in Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005). It's perfection.

Fun assignment in Film History I’m going to try next week with the Hays/Motion Picture Production Code. Pick a recent media artifact you enjoy that definitely wouldn’t pass the Code and then outline some strategies you’d use to remake the work to earn the seal of approval.

New fave: Close to You (2023)

Elliot Page & Hillary Baack are absolutely brilliant in this. Their chemistry was electric. I love the film's free-flowing, improvisational style. It did linger a bit too long with the family scenes. Still I adored it.

Could pair it with You Can Live Forever (2022)

Yes! I joke that we don’t take our dog for walks but rather hunting expeditions. He loves searching for rabbits, moles, squirrels, etc. The instinct is strong.

My dog is part Jack Russell and a rat hates to see him coming.

Very sad to hear the news of Patricia Routledge's passing. I'm one of many Americans who watched Keeping Up Appearances on PBS throughout the '90s and early aughts. And yes it was pronounced BOUQUET!

God speed.

She also starred in Alan Bennett's TV monologues and played the BBC's amateur sleuth Hetty Wainthropp.

Eastern Columbia Building

Built in 1930, the thirteen-story Art Deco building was constructed in the Broadway Theater District of Downtown Los Angeles. One of the city’s most photographed buildings, it is considered the greatest surviving example of Art Deco architecture in L.A
