Asked about paused funding calls at research councils, Chapman said that at BBSRC:

"We’re going to pause gently while we reorient the system to be always open, so it will paused just for matter of a few weeks"

"On MRC...that pause I expect will run until early summer and then will be open again"

I have zero problem with UKRI loooking at and evolving their funding strategy.

This doesn't explain why a cull of live applications AND 12 month pause to other new funding is necessary to bring the new strategy in... 🤷‍♂️

Makes a change. They usually do the 'bad news' emails at 4:30 on Friday lol

That's 12 months of:
No new post-doc positions.
No Early Investigator Awards for ECRs.
Lost jobs and careers.
No overheads to cover University lab costs.
Increased applications to charities, increasing workload and lowering success rates.
No new science being funded.

It's... not good at all.

Rumours of 'more news in spring', which likely means no rounds until summer and no money being released until 2027 at the earliest. Given the virtual cancellation of the current round, where applicants and reviewers have already poured thousands of hours of work and effort, that's a 12 month gap.
We need to be shouting about the effects of this on junior researchers from the roofs, writing to our MPs. We are risking a "missing generation" of researchers.

Yes these things will spit out the code its written but as a reviewer I'm unqualified to judge it.

Any output would require checking with established tools/your eyes to check it's realistic. But people wont. And because it's easy, it becomes common practice despite the foundations being shaky...

As a non-coder I find this approach tricky. The idea of using AI to just say 'analyse this' is certainly attractive but is, of course, massivly risky.

Funny, I was gonna ask you that question... 🤔

3 points per peak is a great method for saying what's there. It's not a great way to find out how much...

Day of the Triffids? Maybe Kurt Vonnegut?

That's not a reflection on the players BTW. They're all inexperienced, and we're asking them to do something no other club would do but we've no choice. I hope they benefit long term. And I see and appreciate the efforts they put in for themselves, the clud and the fans. Its just an impossible ask.

Not without fresh legs/bodies. No coincidence that this dip was at Xmas following a packed schedule.

I'm not a fan of Pederson's approach or tactics but the squad's been running on fumes for the last few weeks. We don't have the energy to get up and down or the quality to make it count when we do.

or 3) The administrators have to raise money to make ends meet should the Bord deal no go through and the only way to do that is via sales and Bannan is one of only about 5 players who would command any kind of fee mid-season.

😭😭😭😭

If this happens, and it looks likely, the club will have lost one of its best ever servants.

Not enough words to say thank you for all he's done for #swfc.

I know it's not what he would have chose. Gutted is an understatement. #wawaw

Risk for Starmer/Labour here is that Burnham's personal stock in Manchester is high. He can point to a LOT of good things he's done as mayor. Standing a relative unknown in a by-election makes it more lose-able, in my view.

It would be typically Wednesday if Barry Bannan's first game for a new club happens to be against us at Hillsborough on Valentine's Day #swfc #justsaying
Every season, the Owls Foundation gives its members three discounted fixtures in the second half of the campaign.

This year, the first of those games is Wednesday v Millwall on Valentine’s Day!

Yup. In theory, they surely know that you need money, investment in facilities and hire good people to make any business work. They've built successful businesses (unlike DC). In practice, I'm OK with the analytics stuff but I don't want us to be an experiment in 'can AI run a football club?'.
