This is genuinely terrifying and also entirely predictable, based on the direction of policy and rhetoric that has been, in many instances, entirely bipartisan in recent years
Under Trump, the draconian future of homelessness policy is coming into focus: mass internment. Utah is building a 16-acre site to detain up to 1,300 homeless people inside locked "accountability centers." This is profoundly alarming.

State law specifically prohibits landlords from weaponizing immigration enforcement against their tenants, says Jake Marshall, staff attorney for @beyondlegalaid.bsky.social:
“No matter their immigration status, every tenant in Illinois is entitled to formal, in-court eviction proceedings."
That could set a dangerous precedent, says Jonah Karsh of @mtochicago.bsky.social: “If landlords can just call the feds to get rid of who they want, then that’s a really bleak reality for tenants and their security going forward.”
Meanwhile, dozens of citizens were detained for hours during the raid without explanation.

At least some of the units raided that night were occupied by longtime residents — including senior citizens — who, for one reason or another, had not been paying rent or did not have current leases.
Prior to the raid, the landlord tipped off federal authorities about dozens of Venezuelan migrants living in the building, claiming they had threatened other tenants, according to an unnamed official speaking to the Associated Press.

But just 8 of 37 people arrested had any kind of criminal record.

Excellent read by @rebeccaburns.bsky.social , from the history of union pension investments to the growing number of union members “calling for investment in social goods, like green energy and affordable housing.”
"As some of the world’s largest institutional investors, pension funds are especially exposed to the risks posed by climate change. They’re also uniquely positioned to address them."

Journalist Mario Guevara has been detained for over 100 days. Now, he faces deportation —for just doing his job.

The same energy that defended Jimmy Kimmel should be used to defend Guevara, a journalist who is not facing any charges.

I was back at 26 Federal Plaza today, where an ICE agent violently threw this bereft woman to the ground in front of her kids. She had not touched him. She did not pose any threat. She had to be taken to the hospital. (🎥: Elias Eliahu)
🤔
That was interesting. A Dodge Durango w/a scuffed hood, duct tape dangling from the side & a “FUCK ICE” sticker on the back flashed blue and red hidden lights at the Broadview police checkpoint and drove through. It was greeted by fed agents & drove toward the ICE facility.
