Started digging in on a roster overview and the simple takeaway is it'll be flabbergasting if another sizeable move doesn't happen. The position player group mix feels so ill-fitting, don't love the lineup options, trickles down to a weird bench. Cora can do it, but this is hard mode for no reason.

I post these charts about 100 times during a season. This is what the 6th worst "quality of contact" looked like in MLB last year, out of 309 players.

In the 2000s, there have been 4,461 individual MLB seasons with at least 450 plate appearances. Last year, Kiner-Falefa's season ranked 4,215th.

I guess add Casey Schmitt to the maybe available infielder options now that the Giants signed Arraez? Another imperfect option, but I'm more interersted there than a lot of the other names mentioned for months.

Sox likely would have hired him to be Chief Baseball Officer, but he was one of the long list of people who declined an interview. Rough couple of years with the Twins since for the Massachusetts native.
Twins mutually agree to part ways with team president Derek Falvey.

Rafaela & Duran continue to be the names I hear about in trade stuff the most, with a hint of Bello recently. Abreu stuff seems more like outside wishful thinking, but who knows what Bres is thinking. Recent idea discussed was trading for a stopgap 2B/3B and trading an outfielder for a top prospect.

Gavin Fien was thought to be the Red Sox preferred choice in the draft, but Texas took him 3 picks earlier. Now goes to Toboni in Washington.
Trade summary:

Rangers get - MacKenzie Gore
Nationals get - Gavin Fien, Alejandro Rosario, Abimelec Ortiz, Devin Fitz-Gerald, Yeremy Cabrera

David Stearns got a closer, setup man, #1, third baseman, first baseman, second baseman, and center fielder this winter and I have no idea if it's going to grade out as an A or an F.

Breslow: “It’s really important we improve our defense, particularly our infield defense. … Any additions we make, we’ll be very mindful of defense.”

I love these Red Sox/Astros reports coming from the worst accounts known to man. People start putting obvious 2s and 2s together, and then unleash the dumbest trade “rumors” ever seen before human centipeding them through each other to say rumors are growing louder.

Early's control is still a question mark. If it slips back over a larger sample in the majors, can he maintain his high strikeout rate to offset it?

fwiw, I heard the Marte to the Sox holdup was because of the position player they were asking for, which wasn't Duran.

Over the last two seasons, Suarez and Gray are 17% and 23%.
A lot of pitching can be boiled down to simply K-BB%, and there isn't a clearer indicator of how badly the Red Sox need to acquire someone to slot in behind Crochet this offseason.

I like Ranger Suarez, super interesting control / bad contact / big game guy... but after doing the Gray deal, paying market rate for Suarez, knocking a decent pitcher out of the rotation, losing the bonus pool money and picks... not a huge fan of the overall operation.
