Set pieces belong in football. Just because teams are too dumb (sorry, but scoring from a set piece is as easy as defending it) to defend them doesn't mean we should scrap them. Chaos isn’t the status quo – sometimes it’s just laziness. Teams will realize this, and the trend will eventually fade.

Found a basketball study showing clear link between mental toughness & shooting accuracy (Ali, 2025). Tougher players shoot better under pressure, handle mistakes faster. Likely even more relevant in football: low-scoring game → every shot carries more decision weight.

Maybe fullbacks are the key in this kind of football against man-marking. Centre-backs feel the most pressure - and they release it through the fullbacks. By drifting inside, they break vertical pressing angles and force defensive reassignments.
Stretch the pressure wide - and man-marking collapses.

Seeing this a lot lately: tactical analysis ≠ a coach’s match plan. It always includes intuition, interactions & even “coincidences” (every coincidence is prepared in some way). Big misconception: tactics isn’t just a chessboard of pre-set moves—it’s a mix of planning, intuition & interplay.

Still wondering whether the fascination with Relationism comes less from the effects of those patterns and more from our lack of proper terms to describe them. Nameless and “new” patterns create an implied magic. But I still push back against the idea that these patterns will soon become the meta.

It feels like Xabi’s half-space 10s have a depth ban when the winger is on the ball – even if gaps show.
🔎 Dribblers create depth & draw pressure on their own, so the half-space task is support.
➡️ Curved runs: hint depth, then arrive ball-side, creating backward diagonality to open switches.

Köln reiste mit guter Form zum Topspiel am 4. Spieltag nach Leipzig, verlor jedoch trotz einer soliden Leistung mit 1:3 gegen die Mannschaft von Ole Werner. Dennoch lassen sich auf beiden Seiten Auf- und Abs anhand der Partie erkennen.
