Another day
Another invasive species

We are literally an island - every new invasive species is a policy and political failure.

Bang!

And the dirt is gone!

We try to use the dig out method where possible - a few skilled swings of a mattock do wonders!
Taking out main root seems to be effective for long term clearance with minimal regrowth.

(We do have to use herbicide sometimes too)

Another pile of rhodo gone!

Rhododendron ponticum is native to Iberia and Caucas region (its actually under pressure in Iberia and people working to save it)!

Ireland is thought to have a cultivar "superponticum" introduced in last century or so which is cold resistant, perfect for Irish climate.

Cherry Laurel on the march from gardens into woodlands.

Crazy that the government has not acted on the Citizen's Assembly's recommendation to ban it for sale (How many years ago was that?)

The alternative of Griselinia or Portugese Laurel are not good either.

Nothing wrong with Holly, Yew etc

Nice afternoon of botanising in Sliabh Aughty, Co. Clare. Highlights - a new site for gametophyte of Killarney fern and 2nd county record for Polystichum x bicknellii (hybrid between P. aculeatum and P. setiferum) Need to confirm ID of latter but it seem to fit the description 🤞

Had fun working with the @rhodorangers.bsky.social over the weekend to tackle invasive rhodo in Connemara!
A long weekend of slow work digging up regrowth from old stumps and seedlings while getting stung by bees and drenched in the odd downpour at our first site in Corr Uí Mhongáin..... mostly done here but some giant rhubarb will eventually need seeing to
