Come along if you’re in Brum on the 26th; I certainly won’t be advocating for the imposition of anti-capitalist narcoticism into mainstream geographical thought

BTF V has arrived from the printers!

This time we have truly been working in stone time and befittingly the issue is centered around the subsurface: what can be found in the ground under our feet, the rocks that act as conduits to the soil, the depths of the imaginary subterranean…

Great to be interviewed for the @rgsibg.bsky.social Ask the Geographer podcast series! Toby Butler and I chat to Rachel about oral histories and research. It's a lovely resource for A Level students and anyone interested in how oral history can be used in geography!

Why are there wildfires in Scotland?

This summer's heatwaves are triggering destructive wildfires across Europe.

Beyond climate change, Dr Catherine Smith gives a reason why Scotland, often associated with 'cooler' weather, is suffering damage.
"In many parts of Scotland the amount of grazing, especially with cattle, and the controlled use of fire in the winter and early spring (known as muirburn) have decreased in recent decades. This means that there is lots of old and drier vegetation on many moorlands, which, again, is fuel for larger wildfires." (Dr Catherine Smith, Leverhulme Centre for Wildfires, Environment and Society, Royal Holloway, University of London)

We've just published a paper on human occupation of the NW European margin and the importance of local climate reconstructions during the Lateglacial period. The paper represents a lot of work by myself and my coauthors over many years, we're all happy to see it published at last rdcu.be/eusdJ
Summer warmth between 15,500 and 15,000 years ago enabled human repopulation of the northwest European margin
