I saw Ratcliffe's superyacht anchored in a river once. It was awesome in the original meaning: it inspired dread. I don't think anyone for whom that is normal life can understand the world most of us live in. He is the colonist, abstracting money to his tax haven, and that is his floating castle.
Jim Ratcliffe is best known as the unpopular Manchester United owner and today he has been in the news for saying that 'the UK has been colonised by immigrants'. We need to understand Ratcliffe's as an energy billionaire who made his power and money by closing workplaces and opposing unions 🧵
'UK has been colonised by immigrants', says INEOS boss and Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe
In an interview with Sky News's Ed Conway, Sir Jim says Britain faces profound political, social and economic challenges, among them an unprecedented rise in immigration in recent years.

OK I've had a read of the Local Power Plan. It's very welcome and very needed (ideally seventeen years ago but better late than never!) Big incentives for meaningful collaboration with communities & a clear steer that "Ownership matters". Putting community energy up front in the transition ✔️ (1/3)

Yes! Being unbiased in your analysis is vital, but being neutral about your findings is inhuman, and a tradition born of political (even courtly) expedience!
“Scientists should stop trying to be neutral and instead embrace their values,”says a group of top climate scientists, including @katharinehayhoe.com. The neutrality myth is harming the reputation of science right when we need it most.” #ClimateCrisis

Science isn’t neutral. It’s science.
Prominent climate scientist argues it's time to ditch the 'myth of neutrality' | CBC Radio
Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe talks to Bob McDonald about the polarization of science and why she thinks scientists should stop pretending to be neutral when it's our planet at risk.

"Every fight I've been in I won" - wasn't he a Remain supporter? And called for a second referendum?
BREAKING: Keir Starmer tells Labour MPs that he is "not prepared to walk away" from power or "plunge us into chaos" as previous prime ministers have done.

PM says that "every fight I've ever been in, I have won" and that this time will be no different - despite his detractors

#CommunityEnergy because community without energy is primitivism and energy without community is technocracy.

We used to get swarms of sparrows on our feeder (in a normal suburban garden in York) - down to a trickle over the last 18 months or so, and surprisingly now seeing more reed buntings than sparrows. Anyone else observing similar? @yorkbirding.bsky.social

Some news outlets illustrating stories about Storm Chandra with photos of flooding in York, even though it's unrelated & receding. We're just too damn pretty.

You'll remember Ovo failed Ofgem's new financial stress test in the autumn. Two energy suppliers folded last year. If another big one fails will we see some radical reform that it dodged last time?
OVO Energy Group will pay over £2.7 million in redress after failing to provide Warm Home Discount rebates to almost 12,000 customers by the statutory deadline of 31 March 2024.

These customers received their rebate over 19 months late.

Had a read of the Warm Homes Plan. There's a lot of good in it, but it is no radical shakeup that might address a climate emergency. Sticks with existing programmes that are working & tries to improve their reach for low income & vulnerable homes. A few things... (1/6)

Hands up if at some point in the past you thought 'well when the effects get clearer everyone will acknowledge what needs to be done, even if belatedly'. I'll admit to it.

Being an amoral sociopath has long been a requirement for holding power, but of late seems to have become a near requirement for commenting on it too. Mainly because it's boring to hear "this is all obviously deeply wrong and everyone involved should be in prison" all the time.

Wow Windows really screwed up the Start menu huh? "Best matches" comes up with the installer I downloaded in preference to the app it installed, and under "Photos" it suggests images in my recycle bin that it can't actually open. And no way to stop it indexing Store apps that you don't have.
