In these dystopian times I find I am drawn to consume more stories, whether in book, film, tv or other formats. Escape reality. Posting what I’ve read or watched this year.

📚 Books: 4
🎬 Films: 5
📺 TV Series: 5

TV Series 5 of 2026: Ciudad de Sombras. A suspended policeman is called back to investigate a person burnt alive hanging from the Casa Mila in Barcelona. A decent crime drama that shows of Barcelona, in particular the architecture of Gaudí. Watched in Spanish (I didn’t get the Catalan!) #tvsky 📺

Film 5 of 2026: Dune (1984). Supposedly a classic but I found it very difficult to watch. Poor special effects (compared to Star Wars for instance), bad costumes, wooden acting and god awful whispered thoughts on the soundtrack. I suppose it was groundbreaking in the 80s #filmsky #moviesky 🎬

Film 4 of 2026: 28 Years Later. Survivors living on a small island raid the mainland occasionally where infected are somehow still alive (they all died out within 28 weeks). Also zombies can be slow (Slow Lows), intelligent (Alphas) and can also get pregnant #filmsky #moviesky 🎬
February 8, 2026 at 10:32 AM
Film 3 of 2026: 28 Weeks Later. I had seen this years ago but wanted to watch it again before 28 Years Later. I had forgotten it is mostly set on the Isle of Dogs which I know very well. An ok sequel if you ignore the geography of London. Not actually required for the next film #filmsky #moviesky 🎬

“Democracy dies in Darkness”. Trump is switching off the lights
As goes the Washington Post: US democracy takes another hit under Trump
Jeff Bezos’s axing of more than 300 jobs at the storied newspaper has renewed fears about the resilience of America’s democracy to withstand Trump’s attacks

Books 3 and 4 of 2026. A Psalm for the Wild Built, and A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers. Having read the Wayfarers series and enjoyed them I was eager to read these. They are equally beautiful in the way they tackle the human condition. The Wild Robot for adults #booksky 📚
February 1, 2026 at 11:15 PM
TV Series 5 of 2026: Seven Dials. A decent Agatha Christie murder mystery (I haven’t read the book so don’t know how accurate it is). Enjoyed the main character and Martin Freeman as the policeman. Felt like they were setting up further series. #tvsky 📺
January 29, 2026 at 7:49 PM
Film 2 of 2026: The Fall Guy. I wanted this to be funny and fun but although Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling try I didn’t feel they pulled it off. A shame as I remember watching the series in the 80s. A few good moments but disappointing. #moviesky #filmsky 🎬

TV Series 4 of 2026: His & Hers. I wasn’t sure about this after the first episode. None of the main characters are particularly likeable, only the detectives partner Priya seems to have a brain. But it does build to a double twist at the end and I didn’t see either coming. #tvsky #hisandhers 📺

Book 2 of 2026: Real Tigers. The third in the Slow Horses books by Mick Herron. I actually enjoyed this more than the previous books. Better paced and more interesting with decent roles for all the characters. #booksky 📚
January 23, 2026 at 5:27 PM
TV Series 3 of 2026: Stranger Things 5. A decent end to the show, everyone gets a job to do throughout the series. I had expected a higher cost to be paid by the group of characters, and the last hour was really just tying up everyone’s stories but enjoyed it. #tvsky 📺
January 23, 2026 at 5:23 PM
TV Series 2 of 2026: Run Away. A fairly typical Harlan Coben story. There are twists and intrigue in every episode, and the last one is a doozy. Decent performances from James Nesbitt and Ruth Jones. #tvsky 📺

Book 1 of 2026: Harry Potter & the Philosopher’s Stone. I had never read this before, we were given the set for my 8 year old son. It’s perhaps a little advanced for an 8 year old although he did seem to enjoy it, but there were a lot of questions throughout. We are on to the second one #booksky 📚
January 18, 2026 at 8:12 PM
Film 1 of 2026: A Minecraft Movie. What to say about this? Basically terrible, but it has Minecraft stuff so the boy loved it. Jack Black plays himself (just named Steve), Jason Momoa plays a washed up video game champion and there are some kids. I like Minecraft but not this #filmsky #moviesky 🎬

TV Series 1 of 2026: Love, Death + Robots series 1. Been watching this on and off throughout last year. Some nice little short animated sci-fi films. Very varied animation styles and subject matter. I will definitely watch the other seasons. #tvsky 📺
January 18, 2026 at 7:28 PM
Film 42 of 2025: La Huella del Mal. An ok thriller, based in Atapuerca archaeological site, with the theme of evil in human nature. A girl is found killed in the same way as an unsolved case. A twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. We watched in Spanish. #filmsky #moviesky #peliculasky 🎬
December 31, 2025 at 10:47 AM
Film 41 of 2025: Wake Up Dead Man. Takes a while to get going with a good hour of setup. Once it does it is an intriguing mystery with many nods to books. Some good acting from Josh O’Conner, Josh Brolin and Glenn Close. Better than Glass Onion, not as good as Knives Out #filmsky #moviesky 🎬
December 27, 2025 at 10:54 PM
TV Series 36 of 2025: The Crystal Cuckoo/El Cuco de Cristal. Not a bad “newcomer to a small town” mystery. Told over different timelines, a young woman visits the town where her heart donor lived and died and discovers that people have been going missing. We watched in Spanish #tvsky 📺
December 27, 2025 at 10:48 PM
Films 39 and 40 of 2025: Dune parts 1 & 2. A visually impressive (and sonically oppressive) adaptation of Dune. Good performances from Zendaya in the expanded role of Chani, and Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica. Chalamet also gets close to the books unlikeable hero/messiah #filmsky #moviesky 🎬
December 20, 2025 at 8:41 AM
TV Series 35 of 2025: A Man on the Inside series 2. Ted Danson’s retired professor continues his career as a private investigator, this time he is sent to a college. It’s nice they managed to keep some of the characters from the first series. Crazy but touching as well #tvsky 📺

December 9, 2025 at 11:30 AM
Film 38 of 2025: 1917. Sam Mendes’ story of a pair of soldiers asked to cross no man’s land to deliver a message to save lives. Shot to appear like one take, it is very impressive cinematography. Some incredible scenes and an emotional ending. #filmsky #moviesky 🎬
December 9, 2025 at 11:13 AM
TV series 34 of 2025: Caught/Atrapados. An Argentinian adaptation of a Harlen Coben book. Quite a good story about a journalist trying to catch a child abuser. Set in beautiful Patagonia. We watched in Spanish. Un buen adaptación y emocionante. #tvsky #español 📺
December 9, 2025 at 11:08 AM
Book 38 of 2025: The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl. I had never read this one. It has all the typical Dahl traits, nasty people (in this case hunters) who get taught a lesson (via a bit of role reversal). Quite short but grisly fun. #booksky 📚
December 9, 2025 at 11:03 AM
Film 37 of 2025: Companion. This is a great twist on the popular genre of girlfriend robot goes mad (see Subservience). In this you are rooting for the robot. Good performances by Jack Quaid and especially Sophie Thatcher. Some good twists too. #filmsky #moviesky 📚
