I think I'd like to consider With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge. The man clearly had some form of PTSD from the war, and I think writing that memoir was a way of coping with it. Either way, firsthand accounts are always a good read.

There are far too few books with handicapped characters in them, imo. One that does come to mind is Loamhedge by Brian Jacques, in which the protagonist Martha is wheelchair bound. It's a great tale, really. One of my faves.

I think Preussens Grosser König fits here. It's a collection of 18 essays about the life and times of King Frederick the Great of Prussia, a fellow I've heard much about over the years but never really looked into before now.

So many possibilities, but for this, I think I'll pick Kalevala, the Finnish epic by Elias Lönnrot. I've never been to Scandinavia, but I'd love to visit someday, as its history, landscapes and languages are utterly fascinating to me.

Again, kinda' hard since I have so many that fit the bill, but I'm gonna' say Færeyinga Saga (in the original Old Norse, of course). I've wanted to read it for years, and I think I finally have the skill in Icelandic to tackle it!

#TBRuary Day 8: Long Ago

Wrapping up this first week, choose a book from your TBR that's written or set in a time before you were alive. This could be a chance to pick up a classic, go for something historical, or get fanciful!

I look forward to reading Tales from Mistmantle by M. I. McAllister. Margi is definitely an older author, but I absolutely adore her work, and can't wait to return to the world of Mistmantle!

Déjà vu! This is the second year in a row that we didn't hear the alarm in our room: just the intercom announcement to ignore it! XD
What's a little AnthroExpo without a fire alarm? Don't worry folks, it was just a little haze in main events. The building is safe to return to.

Paws down, Martin the Warrior by Brian Jacques. It's more subtle in the book than in the tv show, of course, but as straight book couples go, the Martin-Rose romance is the kind of unrequited love story my teenage self delighted in.

#TBRuary Day 6: Love is Love

Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. I hadn't studied Spanish as a 17 year old and I'm still not fluent enough to tackle a tome like that, but it's definitely worth the effort. (Found it hilarious even then, btw. ;)

#TBRuary Day 4: Speaking Your Language

This is hard, 'cause I have a *huge* pile of foreign language lit (esp. Germanic). But one I'd really like to get to is De Bello Gallico by Julius Caesar. I've been a big Roman admirer since I was a kid, and I always love to see how a great general explains his campaigns in his own words.

#TBRuary Day 3: Around the World

I have some Japanese and Chinese lit, but I haven't been skilled enough to read much of it. So, unoriginal though it be, I'll have to say the Bible.

#TBRuary Day 2: Racial Diversity

Okay, I did it: saw Return of the King with the bf. So, he has now been exposed to possibly the best film trilogy of all time, and I have been reminded what great cinema looks like...and by extension, how much today's cinema pales in comparison.

Just saw The Two Towers in the theater with the bf. Man, those Gollum scenes really drag, but it's still my favorite film of the trilogy. After I saw Helm's Deep as a kid, I was all gung-ho to see Return of the King the following year!

Didn't wake up expecting to go watch Fellowship of the Ring at the theater for the first time in 25 years, but the bf took me this evening and I don’t regret it. Brought back good memories for me, and he finally got to see the full masterpiece the way it was meant to be viewed!
