Getting older IS weird. 🥲

God, getting older is weird.

When we were younger, hanging out was as easy as breathing. We slept over at each other’s houses, sometimes staying up until sunrise the next morning. We’d go out to the movies on weekends or to the bar every other night once we turned 21, having parties and living up the days of our youth like they would never end.

Then, priorities started changing. Hangouts spaced out to every other week, then once a month, before finally, maybe only a few times a year. No one could be blamed for the shift. It was just how things went as soon as the guys got married and started having kids. Their families became their focus, and everything else naturally fell by the wayside.

I don’t like to think that I was left behind, but my life didn’t lead me down the same paths they took, and a small part of me worries that if I didn’t see them every day at work, I might have naturally fallen into obscurity as well, almost like I never existed. It’s why I’ve held myself back, sticking it out at the shop as long as I have—so that at least we have an excuse to talk to each other and not test the limits of our friendship.

"Freja, really, I'm fine. I just..." I'm ready to make all sorts of excuses, tell her that I just don't want to sift through these clothes, all of which remind me of my ex. That I just don't want to be in the same room with anything that reminds me of her right now, including that medal.
"No, you're not," she says. "And that's okay. You don't have to do this alone. Let's go out, get some drinks, and you can tell me all about how shitty of a girlfriend Madison was."

Nia, don't lie to yourself. You are definitely thinking of pawning that old guy's stuff whether he comes back or not.

“Young Iresh didn’t mention a trip!” Madame de Groiv laughed.

Young. The man had to be forty!

The landlady looked at Nia curiously. “Oh, but then you’re staying here while—”

“An emergency,” Nia said. “Uncle Iresh was called away as soon as I arrived.”

“Oh dear,” Madame de Groiv said, failing to ask why Nia—why Baarsin—was visiting Bir Accio at the height of summer. “Is he all right?”

“It’s an old friend,” Baarsin said, feeling the young woman settle about her. “In Birajad. They’re unwell.”

The landlady looked at her warily. “Not the rings, I trust?”

“No, no,” Baarsin laughed, searching for something that would put the older woman at ease. “A broken leg.”

There. Not contagious, and a lingering injury would both excuse away Iresh’s absence and buy Nia time to pawn the man’s belongings, should his disappearance prove more permanent than she hoped.

Final rounds of edits are like going to the dentist. You spend so much extra time brushing/flossing, convinced your teeth are spotless, only to have the dentist proceed to scrape 2 lb of food/plaque out of the crevices. I'm in the plaque-scraping trenches of edits.
