The problem with inviting the unnatural into your life is it might decide to stay. Joe Hill: King Sorrow King Sorrow follows the lives and choices of 6 friends: Arthur, Colin, Donovan (Van), Donna, Allison (Allie) and Gwen, as they deal with the consequences of helping one of them find a way to escape from a blackmailer who threatens to harm a family member if they don't provide them with valuable items from a local college. Their method of escape, and revenge, comes with an unexpected price...one that each deals with differently as it pits their senses of morality with their desire for survival. Hill delivers a fantastic, superbly paced tale, full of surprises, twists and betrayals. No one was ever in charge of a dragon. Some snakes were too big to catch by the tail. The Kellough family has had a rough time of it lately and then young teenager Saoirse Kellough goes into the forest with her younger brother Jack, but only he returns. Is she just lost in the woods? A runaway? A victim of some sad accident? Or the latest in a series of girls who have gone missing in the area over the last 20 years? The Gardai (police) need Jack's help to understand what happened... but he's not talking. Therapist Freya Hemmings is enlisted to help unlock the secrets that Jack is keeping, in hopes of providing the Gardai with the information they need to find Saoirse and bring her home safely. As Freya slowly begins to gain Jack's trust, she learns more about the family's past and their difficulties, as well as the town's widespread fear of the forest. The more she learns, the more she questions what may have really happened. This story drew me in - Nolan's characters are compelling, intriguing and tragic - each with their own strengths, weaknesses and secrets. The rural setting is beautifully described and the nearby forest is almost a character in and of itself. Nolan delivers captivating characters, tense situations, lots of possibilities about what happened and who might have been involved, and a surprising ending. Recommended! This is a fantastic fictional true-crime story: creepy, suspenseful and surprising! Make sure you read Chasing The Boogeyman first!

While you don't have to read Chasing The Boogeyman before diving into the new book, you should strongly consider doing so, as there are references to people and events from the earlier book that will make more sense if you do. Here's my spoiler free review of the original. In this fictional "true crime" story Chizmar delivers a suspenseful, even more personal tale full of unexpected action, twists and turns. A series of gruesome killings straight out of The Boogeyman's playbook are happening, and the Chizmar family and friends are right in the middle of it all. The tale is told with a mix of current event reporting, interview transcripts, photos and recollections that build to a satisfying and completely unexpected conclusion.

The story presents an interesting mythology in the appearance of Lobodomar Devorador, recounted against the backdrop of a city unknowingly falling to the coming of the Dark, with seemingly few beings aware of and able to defend against it.
