Single mother and high school counselor Abby Russo deals with the aftermath of the deaths of two students, and learns that her loner son Benjamin may have known the girls better than she realizes. As she finds out more about the circumstances of their deaths she begins to worry that Benjamin may have been involved in some way. Abby has always been concerned about how her son was growing up. Worried that he was a loner who didn't fit in, and worried about what he was learning about how men should treat women. She knows something about troubled teens. She had been one herself and still carries the scars of her first-hand experiences with the actions of a teenage boy with little concern for others. Her older brother Ewan has spent many years in prison for his actions as a teenager, and she fears that Benjamin might be headed down a similar path. Can she navigate between helping and trusting her son, and finding the truth? The tale is mostly told from Abby's point of view, gradually revealing fears and secrets as the perspective switches between present day and her teenage years. In the latter third of the book the perspective broadens to include present day Benjamin, as the suspense ratchets up and further truths and lies are uncovered. WHAT BOYS LEARN is suspenseful, thrilling, disturbing and thought-provoking! A fascinating story, providing plenty to think about how and what children, especially boys, are exposed to as they grow and the impact that exposure can have on them and the people around them. The text of the review is: Sarafina by Philip Fracassi is an incredible tale set in the American South during the Civil War. The three Belle brothers, Mason, Archie and Ethan make a desperate decision to escape the horrors of war, little knowing the horrors they would escape into. Chased by the Confederate Home Guard as deserters they find refuge in an apparent idyllic setting: an isolated farm inhabited only by the beautiful Sarafina and her young son Titus. Sarafina provides protection, healing, food and shelter to the brothers. As they begin to recover from their harrowing escape and Sarafina's influence on his older brothers grows, Ethan begins to suspect that things aren't quite as they seem. The more he learns and sees, the more convinced he becomes that they need to leave... but that may not be possible. Fracassi delivers an exciting story with compelling and complex characters who aren't all what they seem, with an ending that was both surprising and haunting. I found it difficult to put the book down the deeper into it I got. Recommended.

The text of the review is: I am still trapped in the void, deep within the corridors of insanity. ― Jeff Oliver, The Voices in Your Head THE VOICES IN YOUR HEAD by Jeff Oliver is a disturbing, violent and gruesome tale told from the perspective of Geoff Hathaway. As a teenager Geoff experienced unimaginable horror and suffered tragic losses, including the murder of his entire family. In spite of, or perhaps because of, thiose losses he finds a way to exact horrific revenge on the murderers. But he learns that revenge comes at a price - a price he has been paying ever since as he is tormented each day by voices and visions of his murdered family and... others. Geoff's torment is reflected at times in his chaotic first-person recounting of the "visitations" he endures. Told as a mix of prose and poetry, this story leaves open the question of whether those visitations are simply distorted memories, hallucinations caused by his mental state or real. Whether real or not, there is no doubt about the impact these have on him, and on those he encounters. The story is enhanced by artwork by Dan Verkys who brings to life the horrors that Oliver describes. This is not a book I would recommend to casual horror readers. There are descriptions of horrific deaths and cannibalism that will likely be triggering for some. That said, it is a tale told in a unique style and may leave you wondering whether those soft whispers that wake you up at night are simply leftover fragments of your dream... or something else.

The text of the review is: I've really enjoyed everything I've read by Aaron R. Tyler... THE STEPHEN KING KILLER: A serial killer with a taste for horror is no exception - it's a fantastic, graphic & violent tale of a serial killer. It has a great premise and is written with superb execution (pun intended)! The people of the Twin Tiers region of New York and Pennsylvania have a problem. There is a serial killer among them and no one, least of all law enforcement, realizes it... Victims are piling up: tortured, sexually assaulted and marked by the killer. When an overheard conversation makes FBI agent Joe Thorogood suspect that a murder he investigated may be connected to another, the FBI gets involved to understand the scope of the killings and track down the killer. The killer, however, takes great care to hide their tracks and keep the investigators guessing. Tyler delivers a fantastic story and wonderful characters. The investigators are dedicated, determined and all too human (and, apparently, none of them are Stephen King fans!). The victims are desperate and helpless. And the killer is intelligent, horrifically inventive, and merciless. After reading this story you may want to think twice about naming a child after a favorite character in a movie or book...

Joe Hill: King Sorrow King Sorrow follows the lives and choices of 6 friends: Arthur, Colin, Donovan (Van), Donna, Allison (Allie) and Gwen, as they deal with the consequences of helping one of them find a way to escape from a blackmailer who threatens to harm a family member if they don't provide them with valuable items from a local college. Their method of escape, and revenge, comes with an unexpected price...one that each deals with differently as it pits their senses of morality with their desire for survival. Hill delivers a fantastic, superbly paced tale, full of surprises, twists and betrayals. No one was ever in charge of a dragon. Some snakes were too big to catch by the tail. The Kellough family has had a rough time of it lately and then young teenager Saoirse Kellough goes into the forest with her younger brother Jack, but only he returns. Is she just lost in the woods? A runaway? A victim of some sad accident? Or the latest in a series of girls who have gone missing in the area over the last 20 years? The Gardai (police) need Jack's help to understand what happened... but he's not talking. Therapist Freya Hemmings is enlisted to help unlock the secrets that Jack is keeping, in hopes of providing the Gardai with the information they need to find Saoirse and bring her home safely. As Freya slowly begins to gain Jack's trust, she learns more about the family's past and their difficulties, as well as the town's widespread fear of the forest. The more she learns, the more she questions what may have really happened. This story drew me in - Nolan's characters are compelling, intriguing and tragic - each with their own strengths, weaknesses and secrets. The rural setting is beautifully described and the nearby forest is almost a character in and of itself. Nolan delivers captivating characters, tense situations, lots of possibilities about what happened and who might have been involved, and a surprising ending. Recommended! While you don't have to read Chasing The Boogeyman before diving into the new book, you should strongly consider doing so, as there are references to people and events from the earlier book that will make more sense if you do. Here's my spoiler free review of the original. In this fictional "true crime" story Chizmar delivers a suspenseful, even more personal tale full of unexpected action, twists and turns. A series of gruesome killings straight out of The Boogeyman's playbook are happening, and the Chizmar family and friends are right in the middle of it all. The tale is told with a mix of current event reporting, interview transcripts, photos and recollections that build to a satisfying and completely unexpected conclusion.

Erica is fascinating - a protagonist with challenges and a surprising strength of character. Someone who is able to do what's needed while recognizing and owning the cost. The story presents an interesting mythology in the appearance of Lobodomar Devorador, recounted against the backdrop of a city unknowingly falling to the coming of the Dark, with seemingly few beings aware of and able to defend against it.
