“In Victorian mill towns, workers saved up to buy books. In one Scottish locale, a boy noticed a ragman reading a book. The book—which the ragman lent him—was Thucydides. The boy was Ramsay MacDonald, who would go on to become Britain’s first Labour prime minister.”
A blunt explanation for the decline of reading is that people cannot be bothered. In multiple surveys young people describe it as “boring” and “a chore”
Is the decline of reading making politics dumber?

Strong coordination of wage setting in Nordic countries has been maintained through pattern bargaining. However, this may come into conflict with the future needs of labour reallocation due to aging populations & higher demand for military personnel.

Spare another thought for Powell. US consumer's 1 year-ahead inflation expectations are soaring to 6.7% from 5.0%.

Critically, these surveys were hobbled by partisanship, but it's now rising across all three political affiliations, especially amongst independents - per @nicktimiraos.bsky.social

No, tullien noston aloittaminen naapureiden kanssa on niin älytön ajatus, että markkinoilla on vieläkin vaikeuksia uskoa, etteikö siitä vetäydyttäisi nopeasti.
Goldman Sachs, Jan 21: "Despite Trump’s comments that the 25% tariff will be implemented in 10 days, we continue to believe the odds of a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico are low (20%)." Why have analysts been caught so flat-footed by Trump doing *exactly what he said he would*?
