In this week's column I seek to explain Keir Starmer's flat refusal to change our electoral system, even though its gross unfairness could put Reform UK in power on <30% of the vote. The reasons, I believe, are deeply cynical and disturbing. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
If Reform ever wins power in Westminster, it will be because of Labour’s cowardice | George Monbiot
Starmer could improve our unfair electoral system to stop the hard right, but he won’t. All the party has left are threats about ‘splitting the vote’, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

Could you spot the warning signs?

Many homes have a range of electrical goods, from those that help us with everyday tasks such as washing machines and dishwashers through to appliances that we use around the house such as games consoles, electric blankets, kettles, and much more.

You might think that people like Putin, Trump, Epstein, Musk, Farage, Bannon, Johnson (the list of the dodgy, self-serving and dishonest goes on), supporting and celebrating Brexit would have sounded alarm bells.

It was, is and always will be a disaster.

Painting of the battle of Romano by Paolo Uccello. The central figure is Niccolo Mauruzi da Tolentino. One of three paintings coveted by Lorenzo de’Medici. He bought one but he forcibly removed the other two to the Palazzo Medici #ItalianArt #nationalgallery

Most people need very little reason NOT to vote. If there is the tiniest chance that there might be violence at your polling place--lots of people will stay home instead of voting. That's how voter supression by intimidation works (just ask the 20th c. South!). We need to be planning against it NOW.
Can Trump "take control" of 50 separate state-administered elections? No, obviously not.

Can he send ICE thugs to select, significant polling places? Yes.

Will at least some red-state officials bend or break rules to help Rs win? Yes.

The threshold to charge/prosecute is quite high, but if a clear link £ for info or use of market sensitive info for profit, could cross it

There may well be more government scrutiny of what was leaked

Peter Mandelson has written to Labour's general secretary to 'step down' from party membership. Labour was being called on to suspend/investigate; his being an ex-member may prevent/impede that. I think Mandelson is currently on leave of absence from House of Lords
