Inevitably in the powder keg that is the US there will be a protest that becomes violent. A riot fueled by a police killing of a defenceless black man is always a possibility. I fear that Trump will use ICE, the National Guard and the military to crack down with unprecedented brutality.

I think history will look back favourably on Trudeau. Yet he was very unpopular even before Freeland left cabinet. The confusing Christmas tax break and the promise of a $250 check to everyone were ill-conceived, desperate moves. If he had stayed, Poilievre would now be Prime Minister.
