Shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden & unexpected passing, on Friday, of Dave Cornell, owner/brewer of Poppyland Brewery in Cromer. Dave played a key role in the Norfolk/Belgian Brewers Collab. A kind and lovely man, brother of beer historian Martyn. Deepest condolences to Mandy.
RIP Dave.

I have never kept beer festival glasses, but here’s one still with me - it’s from the 1994 CAMRA Somerset beer festival in Bridgewater, the first festival I went to after we’d left London for a village outside the town - I even think I have the programme somewhere with the beers ticked off😆

Just watched Arsenal v Manchester United. Compelling match. Good result for Michael Carrick, ex West Ham. Disappointing that Forest win has opened 5pt gap with #WestHam. Call a Black Cab! #BskyBeer

Missed #WHUSUN. 3-1 victory gives us a massive six-pointer. And a fabulous delivery from the postman. Sadly can't open to celebrate as needs ageing. #BskyBeer

South Herts @camraofficial.bsky.social AGM, welcoming new members, getting ready to host this year's national Members' Weekend. Excellent presentation @petebrownbeer.bsky.social of his book #Clubland, the influential role of clubs, packed with anecdotes & humour. Wye Valley Pyoneer on top form.

Looking forward to South Herts @camraofficial.bsky.social AGM this pm. Guest speaker my friend @petebrownbeer.bsky.social talking about his book Clubland, a lively societal history of working men's clubs. Appropriately in a St Albans club, but @camraofficial.bsky.social members only.

Moving service today for John Hanscomb, the first editor of @camraofficial.bsky.social Good Beer Guide. Tributes to his warmth & humour, love of music, his melodeon, cycling, real ale. A lovely mix of jazz & folk music including "Wild Mountain Thyme" sung by Brian, Linzi & Ellie Hanscomb. RIP John.

Confused? We could be. Ethos of stewardship? We can only hope. Some excellent beers at stake. Paramount Retail Group owns Yorkshire's Saltaire Brewery. #BskyBeer

Today on the 9153, an anxious passenger approached me during boarding. He doesn't like flying, and being from Spain, was upset about yesterday's accident. My colleague found out that the poor guy's parents were due to be on one of the trains. He'd had no news at that point. They're OK apparently.

He threatened a hostile takeover of Greenland, Europe circled the wagons, he backed down for now pitching it as a win in someone else's words. #StandUpToTrump
The is not a new deal - this is Trump surrendering. For now. They have always said that the US & NATO is free to do what it wants in Greenland from a military perspective. Trump said that wasn’t good enough because he needs the US to “own” it. So this is simply Trump backing down

#EnfieldOakLatest Enfield Council has started eviction proceedings against the Toby Carvery owners, Mitchells & Butlers, re the unauthorised felling of the ancient oak, their failure to engage or make reparations.
A 500 year old oak tree, on the ancient tree inventory, has been felled for "health & safety" reasons by a Toby Carvery in an Enfield park. Pub chain owners Mitchells & Butler say they "did the decent thing". Enfield Council describe the felling as criminal damage. "The tree belonged to Enfield".

The Telegraph heading "Losing pubs threatens the fabric of society. Disappearance of familiar landmarks has a deeply negative effect on residents' wellbeing" is spot on, but the impression that they were protected during the long period of Conservative govt is clearly nonsense.

New Brugge Guide entry: Más, Academiestraat. This is not a beer bar, but a small plates restaurant. I'm putting it in the Guide as it has a rather interesting beer list, with a mix of modern & classic beers:

It’s Tryanuary! We have a ltd stock of vintage Heritage from our friends at the Halve Maan Brewery in Bruges. The 2023 edition was matured for 12 months on new wood & American Oak for a complex, rich, amazing beer. Don’t take our word for it though - grab a friend & try a bottle!

As #Trump invites warmonger Putin to his Board of Peace, sends insane gangster-style letter to Norway PM, surely the time's come for the UK to work together with the EU as they threaten to strike back at Trump with retaliatory leverage. Buttering him up, appeasement, doesn't work. #DonCorleone
