Who am I if I’m not a #DevelopmentalBiologist? A (long) thread. Today on my re-introduction to BlueSky, I would like to tell you how I got here. I am a #FirstGen college attendee and graduate. I was raised in a single-parent household. We struggled financially when I was growing up. 1/

Friends, we are past the point of, “it’s too hard for me to watch, it’s too much for my mental health.” Please watch the videos. They are scary and devastating but you need to prepare yourselves because this violence won’t stay in Minnesota. My heart breaks for those who have been harmed and killed.

Is anyone else having incredible angst about whether or not their labs will continue to be able to do science? I submit-revise-resubmit grants and hope upon hope something with get funded so I can continue to have a lab, but I get waves of panic and sadness over the current state of things. 😢🧬🔬

In case no one has told you lately:

1. You are strong
2. You are beautiful
3. Sea cucumbers have fish that live in their buttholes and eat their ever-regenerating gonads like some sort of sick undersea Prometheus
4. You are deserving of love

Thank you to @labonnelab.bsky.social for sharing this and fighting for science! The way things are going- I have no idea if I will ever get scientifically funding again. I will keep trying but if I’m not politically favored- is it futile? 💔
I explained the dangers of the recent politicization of grant reviews at NIH for The Hill, and also that while diversity otherwise remains a bad word, geographic diversity is somehow laudable.

Anyway, none of my clothes fit so I assume someone came in over the break while I was wearing sweatpants everyday and shrunk all my jeans and dress pants. No idea how to catch the person that did this to me. 😂😭😬

So many students don’t understand the importance of having letters of recommendation from professors who actually know them.

Please put in the effort! Go to office hours! Send your CV! Don’t ask for letters if professors can’t identify you in a lineup or if you didn’t do well in the class. 🫠

Holy jeez…. Starting this week with 6AM Monday rescheduled study section due to a 40+ day govt shutdown, middling with new NIH common forms that are buggy, and ending the week with “SURPRISE” Friday jury duty text/email from a summons I never received is peak 2025. Like… 2025 is 2025ing to the end.
