I review theatre, art and books, and like electronic music, pop, disco, jazz, opera, Siamese cats, coffee, tea shops, and scones with jam. I live in beautiful North East Scotland.
Fuselage is one of the most moving shows you will see @edfringe.bsky.social this August. Annie Laureau lost many friends as Pan Am flight 103 plummeted towards Lockerbie; now she honours their memory in this stunning piece of theatre @pleasance.co.uk.

Jack Brownridge-Kelly's Cold, Dark, Matters suvbverts expectations...again & again & again. It’s a clever, funny, very well acted show that leaves you wondering just what you’ve seen, & whether the truth of it lies anywhere at all.

'Grassroots storytelling and comedy are surely what the Fringe should be all about. The Lost Tapes of Somerfield is a fine example of this.'

Here's my review:

Fringe 2025 - Paul Campbell - The Lost Tapes of Somerfield ⭐⭐⭐⭐
‘It all started with a gala pie’ Affluent foodies may assume the moral high ground about supermarkets, but let’s be honest, few of us could manage without them. Even Nigel Slater admits he buys his loo rolls from one. They’re part of our daily lives, whether we spend £100 on wine in Waitrose or £3 […]

'Ma Name is Isabelle' is a powerful reimagining of one woman’s story.

My next review is of a show performed entirely in Doric (but even if you don't come from NE Scotland, you'll be more than fine.)

My review of Arran R Hawkins' After the Service: Tales of Love & Loss. Two beautifully delivered monologues that talk about death, but also celebrate love.

Second Fringe review:

Sam Macgregor’s new play 'Hold the Line' reveals the stark reality of life as a ‘health adviser’ in an NHS 111 call centre.

First review for this year's @edfringe.bsky.social!

24Weeks, Tatty Pants Theatre Company's excellent, chilling play, looks at friendship, responsibilty, and the control of women's reproductive rights.

A work in progress (with a content warning attached) caused by seeing how #pride month has given papers permission to write more dismissive / dehumanising words on the trans community

As Picnic at Hanging Rock reaches its 50th anniversary, the film's significance will be celebrated as part of a special symposium at the University of Sheffield in June. Call for papers closes 2 May.
Picnic at Hanging Rock @ 50
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Peter Weir's landmark film, Picnic at Hanging Rock. And although the so-called Australian New Wave had been gathering pace throughout the first half of the 1970s, it was the international success of this film (and Sunday Too Far Away) that saw this wave begin to break on foreign shores.

'Justin Kerr-Smiley's 'A Leap in the Dark' is a thrilling story, well told, but it is also a reflection on what it is to be human in a world full of temptation.'

Finally getting round to reading this. If I'd known the chapters were this short and sharp, the stories so gripping and the jokes so good, I'd have started it years ago. Not all writing books are heavy going - who knew?

Absolutely brilliant night with Jenny Eclair at the Tivoli Theatre. Very funny, very frank, & right on point re every decade of a woman's life. I felt seen in the best possible way - 'oh, it's not just me then! Thank goodness!' Highly recommended (NB: lots of swearing.) #Aberdeen #comedy

Current reading: Bill Richardson's The Bachelor Brothers' Bed & Breakfast Pillow Book & James Beard's Delights & Prejudices. Now I want to sample Beard's amazing (& amazingly calorific) food while staying at Hector & Virgil's idyllic island home. Perfect escapism for a miserable January day #booksky

Started Ira Levin's The Stepford Wives first thing this morning and could not put it down. I've never seen the films so I came to it fresh, and my goodness was I gripped by this terrifying story. It was first published in 1972. It's every bit as relevant today. #booksky #feminism

Every so often I dip into the shady world of Nick Sharman, private detective. Dead Flowers is the 15th book in Mark Timlin's enjoyable series, set, as ever, in the seedier parts of South London (which, in 1988, were a lot seedier than some of them are now...) 4* from me. #BookSky #crimefiction
