Even in the US where the word is meaningless, I still find that it has a stricter use in actual news media than in Israel. In Israel, in the Hebrew press in particular, even in the straightforward "news" sections, "terrorist" is used to describe any Arab combatant, even if they attack only the IDF.
The important context left out of most western reporting on the region is that in Israel, "terrorist" is a racial slur
60%+ of Israelis surveyed don't thing the abuses of Palestinian prisoners should be investigated.

84% say the IDF should get an excellent or very good grade for *moral conduct*.

62.5% say a 'terrorist' should be murdered even if they don't pose a threat.

Moments ago: tenants of the South Shore apartment building that federal immigration agents raided at the end of September held a presser to announce they're forming a tenants union.

They're demanding, among other things, sewage removal and heat and electricity restroration.

More updates TK.

to be clear it is also a racial slur in western countries in addition to being a propaganda tool and diplomatic tool which is why it should be avoided in journalism unless it's describing another entity's designation. a news outlet should not be engaging in propaganda, diplomacy or racist incitement

what’s funny (it’s not funny) is how many indie journalists, who—with next to none of the infrastructure propping up the zz’s of the business—not only report incisively on political power but do so without leaving years of embarrassing receipts about their relationships with subjects and sources

I’ve spent a lot of the last three years investigating the rise of anti-trans politics. Often, it came back to the controversy over trans women athletes.

So I teamed up with @pablo.show to look into the leading figure on the issue: Riley Gaines.

"We have a 2000s housing bubble level of financial engineering on top of a 1920s level of private unregulated lending on top of something bigger than a 1990s internet (or 1870s railroad) level of technology and infrastructure build-out. As one of the 3 dozen people on here who actually pay attention to this issue and MENA more broadly as a job it is still very amusing to see people think it's the left who loves this plan. The most voracious defenders of it are Blob careerists or their orbiters— Blinken, McGurk, Lindsey Graham, etc.
