Trump proposal to increase tariffs on Canadian fertilizer seems completely opposed to his broader goal of reducing pressure on US farmers- hiking cost of a key import wouldnt help farmers or reduce food costs. Negotiating strategy but for what goal?

The new National Security Strategy praises Europe’s populist right parties. How are the centrist governments in Europe, who see those parties as a grave threat, then supposed to treat America as an ally?

Trump Official Warns President May Leave His Own Signature Trade Deal
I saw this Newsweek story today. No coincidence as this was Day 2 of the USTR Hearings on USMCA review. Trump has said similar things as well. The key takeaway is they seem to be setting up dumping the agreement and doing bilateral deals with Canada and Mexico. It will be interesting to see if that is where their consultations come out...although that probably doesn't matter much.

Go Small or Go Home? Trump, CUSMA, and the Evolution of Megadeals
Apropos my recent post on the flurry of activity on trade negotiations from the Carney government, Lawrence Herman notes that they are not all cut from the same cloth. He rightly notes that smaller, industry or sector specific negotiations are becoming a more frequent model, which in turn will have some implications for how Canada organizes itself for them. A good read.

Ontario Government Commercial
There has been much talk about the impact of a recent Ontario Government commercial that used old video to demonstrate the views of former President Reagan with respect to tariffs. All that talk, and the fact that we had enough snow that I had to take my snowblower out on my driveway today, got me thinking about some old Ontario Government advertising that I used to see on TV as a kid, probably when I was watching Saturday night hockey with my dad. For those who grew up in Ontario... see if you can remember them.
