My piece in @thespectator1828.bsky.social this week looks back at a lecture I attended this summer where a Cambridge art historian insisted paintings by Stanley Spencer were painted by David Jones. It revealed a weakness that stretches beyond one lecture; how we teach art history is woeful.

A wonderful piece by B.A. Charles, focusing on Charlotte Mandel's new translation of the second volume of 'In Search of Lost Time': 'In the Shadow of Girls in Blossom', which I warmly recommend. I don't think any English translator has brought us closer to Proust's own diction and tone.

Autorretrato, 1913 Fue la hija única del pintor francés Lucien Pissarro, hijo primogénito del reconocido pintor impresionista Camille Pissarro, y su madre fue la grabadora británica Esther Pissarro , de soltera Levy Bensusan. Lebeide with Sulin, 1943 El primer maestro de Orovida durante su adolescencia fue su padre y más tarde en 1913 se formó con el pintor Walter Sickert , perteneciente al Camden Town Group. Orovida munca quiso seguir una educación artística reglada. The Archer's Return, 1931 En un intento por desligarse de la influencia impresionista de su familia, Orovida se interesó por el arte naif y por las culturas orientales de China, Japón, Persia y la India. Las imágenes de animales salvajes o domésticos se repiten con frecuencia, así como escenas extraídas de leyendas y tradiciones locales de Asia. Cebras bebiendo, 1936 Orovida nunca contrajo matrimonio ni tuvo hijos. Murió el 8 de agosto de 1968 en Londres a los 74 años.

Autorretrato, 1887 Aunque recibió formación en dibujo y pintura, no fue hasta que cumplió treinta años que se le permitió desempeñarse como artista profesional. En 1873 viajó a Karlsruhe donde fue instruida por Hans Gude. Interior, 1883 Dejó Karlsruhe para ir a Múnich en 1875, donde se unió a una colonia de artistas noruegos que vivían allí. En Múnich estudió con el francés de inspiración realista Hermann Baisch y con el noruego Eilif Peterssen, a quien algunos consideran su maestro más importante. Sommernatt, 1886 En 1879 Kielland se mudó a París, donde compartió un estudio con su compañero noruego Harriet Backer entre 1880 y 1988. En París exhibió sus pinturas por primera vez. Kielland fue brevemente alumna del pintor paisajista Léon Germain Pelouse . Interior, 1883 Kielland trabajó en la simplificación de su arte en la década de 1890 bajo la influencia de Jens Ferdinand Willumsen. Participó con entusiasmo en debates públicos sobre los derechos de las mujeres. Kielland exhibió su trabajo en el Palacio de Bellas Artes en la Exposición Mundial Colombina de 1893 en Chicago, Illinois.
