Turns out jumping between the real world and grid worlds kinda cheapens all of it since Ares doesn't want to sink into any of it, Jared Leto is so badly miscast you must assume he has dirt on important people, Greta Lee is better than all of this, story feels weirdly small when it shouldn't be.

This is something fans are desperate to ask about. The planned movie, ICE ADOLESCENCE, was officially cancelled by MAPPA, which left many fans heartbroken as they loved the series dearly. We know this is a sensitive topic, and you may not be able to discuss it, but fans would be incredibly grateful for any insight you could offer as to what went wrong or why the movie was ultimately cancelled.

Hideo Katsumata: I can’t talk about the details, as that includes some very private matters. But if you ask whether it’s a creative or business issue, the reasons stem from the creative side. The main reason is that it couldn’t be made due to creative reasons. Since it was an original animation, the people involved—including the creators and the animation studio, MAPPA… among the creators, on the creative side, a situation arose where it just became impossible to proceed with production.

Peacemaker killed it with the finale, heartfelt, funny, weird. It's still doing some content universe building, which who can get that into after a decade and a half of that all the time, but you forget because it's so centered on those characters and their journeys.

Finally caught Kurosawa's Cloud, deceptively simple, takes some big turns all the way until the final scene which makes it into something even bigger. Intrinsically about the alienation, depersonalization, and commodification of our internet-poisoned hell time without making a fuss over computers.
