Later this month, I'm sitting down with the Leadership Alexandria class to talk about education. Not the data. Not the blame. What it actually looks like when a community shows up for its kids. Thanks to the Chamber ALX for the invite.

Publisher's Note: The kids are listening

To my fellow news publishers rushing to fundraise off WaPo's cuts:

Those are journalists losing their jobs. Not a marketing opportunity.

If your product is worth supporting, it was worth supporting last week too. You don't need someone else's bad news to make your pitch.

The podium for the kids and the kids answering questions from the press here is pretty darn good.

How long do you have to live somewhere before it becomes where you're "from"? I lived in Rhode Island for 39 years before moving to Alexandria almost 5 years ago. When someone asks where I'm from, I answer based on the context— but at what point does that change? 5 years? 10 years? Never?

Editor’s note: Mayor Gaskins posts daily video updates on social media. The Alexandria Brief tracked those updates during the storm response. This is our last daily recap unless significant news warrants continued coverage.

Just heard from Pat Miller, market manager of Del Ray Farmers Market. The market is on its normal Saturday schedule, and composting will be available.

The market did not open last Saturday due to ice—the first cancellation in more than 30 years.

TGIF. Here's what's happening in Alexandria today.

Quick PSA: If you're a secret city council candidate planning to file at 6:59 p.m., just know I have weekend plans. A heads up would be lovely. 😆

ACPS board member Ryan Reyna asked the district tonight to consider adding snow days to future calendars, citing the challenges families faced with virtual learning during the recent storm. "Our teachers teach best and our students learn best when they're physically together in a classroom."

ACPS is proposing cuts to middle school Latin and Chinese programs. Budget constraints are real. Enrollment has declined. But I've covered several meetings now where people have shown up to speak. (1/3)

Having worked closely for RKK for nearly a decade, I can tell you he never did anything for awards or accolades. It was about family, team, and community. But he and Bill Belichick deserve to be first-ballot Hall of Famers. The Hall will catch up eventually. It has to.

To everyone sending tips about possible immigration enforcement activity in ALX this week: thank you. Keep them coming. These situations are hard to verify - who's involved, what actually happened. Getting it right matters more than getting it first. FOIA requests and more happening. I'm on it.

I love the Alexandria Brief! You do an excellent job literally sharing the news. Micro-local and superb use of the digital medium. Fast. Fair. Love that you’re doing this, not sure HOW $. As the WashPost and its hollow “democracy dies” motto dies, YOUR WORK MATTERS.

Major thanks to @ryanbelmore.bsky.social for giving this 360 degree coverage. The owner of YDBF lied to the community and accused one of the finest animal welfare professionals I have ever met of lying in an affidavit. Now that everything is out he is conveniently declining to comment.

A note on election coverage: Several ALX City Council candidates are hosting fundraisers this week. My policy is not to donate to or attend candidate fundraisers. If I cover one, I cover all of them equally. I'm under the weather this week and have already missed one, so I won't be at any of them.

Thanks to all who shared this. So far I’ve had two folks reach out- one looking to sell a DC newsletter and another to sell a DC sports website. My DM’s remain open to all opportunities to keep local independent journalism alive.
I don't have Washington Post money. But I do have a local news outlet and a belief that local sports journalism matters.

If you're a WaPo sports writer looking at what's next, let's talk. Maybe we can figure something out together.

DMs open.
