I like that Google Maps has decided to go with "Imbolc (Observed)" as the name of Ireland's new February public holiday.

I'm so hilariously out of step with today's coffee culture. I don't think I'd risk a coffee in any one of these places. Let me know if I'm missing anything.

Episode 11 is the peak of Twin Peaks The Return.
#TwinPeaks
This is one of my favorite scenes from The Return. The music, partly upbeat - partly melancholic, Cooper, having just escaped death, enjoying his life and cherry pie with his new friends, the three enchanting girls in their own dream world: the whole mood is magical, yet intangibly sad.

Saw a screening of Mulholland Dr at the Lighthouse cinema this week and I literally can't stop thinking about it. It's not like anything else but also it's better than anything else.

We don’t dance on the grave of NFTs enough. I had a year where I was repeatedly told by bozos I was going to be irrelevant and extinct for not embracing them, I should be allowed a victory lap.

Tortured by the thought that my nemesis on LinkedIn puzzles doesn't even know she's my nemesis, as she always does them earlier than me. LinkedIn puzzlers will understand.

Reviving my annual book thread: some of the books I read in 2025.

1. Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. Good insubstantial fun. I coincidentally visited Monterey this year, Cannery Row is now just a strip of tourist shops.

Literally a genre-defining thread.
For a while, I collected the worst jokes UK political correspondents ascribed to MPs, especially those sent via WhatsApp.

Because I despise you, I'm migrating the thread here, starting with this absolute *shiter* from 2022, so we can share in the horror together. Please send me the worst you have.

So many people refuse to believe this, even though we've had Facebook as a live experiment for like 20 years. In part this may be because media types get a lot of pushback from anonymous posters and generalise this into a universal internet phenomenon.
It's an extremely common misconception that people who have verified identities or are using their "real" names are less abusive online, but it's not true. Pseudonymous and anonymous people behave less abusively than people using their "real" names: journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

Incredible to claim Bjorn Lomborg as an "early survivor of cancel culture" when he's one of the best exemplars of whatever the opposite of cancel culture is: endlessly platformed, impossible to avoid despite no expertise, continuous errors, nobody asked etc etc
This is particularly stunning because the sheer number of times we demonstrated Bjorn Lomborg was just flat-out lying grew so large that it almost became literally pointless to keep doing it, because he just ignores it and keeps on going
