The photo depicts the last surviving building of Potsdam’s “Acht Ecken” ensemble, a Rococo-style corner house at the intersection of Friedrich-Ebert-Straße and Schwertfegerstraße. This yellow-painted, three-story structure features characteristic concave corner curves, ornate stucco decorations, arched windows, a balcony with cartouche above the central door, and lanterns flanking the green entrance on a cobblestone street with barriers. The building showcases Rococo elements with horizontal banding, pilasters, and a rounded corner facade mimicking the Quattro Fontane fountains by Francesco Borromini in Rome. Originally one of four houses forming the “eight corners” at the crossing, its design includes multiple window axes per side converging at the curved balconies. Commissioned by Frederick the Great and designed by Georg Christian Unger (or possibly Carl von Gontard), the four houses were built 1771-1774 to elevate Potsdam’s cityscape. Damaged in 1945 bombings and three demolished in 1958 urban redevelopment, only the northwest house survived; reconstruction of facades continues today. Poet Heinrich Heine resided here in 1829, completing part of his “Reisebilder.”

An ornate Rococo-style longcase clock commands attention in a state room of Potsdam’s Neues Palais, its gilded carvings dramatically lit against deep red silk wall panels. The composition centers the clock as a vertical focal point, evoking tempus fugit through its elevated white enamel dial floating above swirling scrolls, foliage, and shell motifs. Rich gold ormolu frames the clock’s body, with asymmetrical Rococo details like masks and cartouches enhancing its sculptural presence. Patterned veneer suggests fine marquetry, while the circular dial features black Roman hour numerals, Arabic minutes, and slender hands within a beaded bezel. The clock integrates seamlessly with the room’s gilded moldings and parquet floor, the crimson backdrop amplifying its opulent silhouette. This placement underscores the Neues Palais’s Baroque grandeur, built by Frederick the Great post-Seven Years’ War as a symbol of Prussian power.
