Some of you lot may remember that morning, when I briefly entertained the idea of writing a column about growing plants for that plant magazine I subscribed to.

Dunno what came over me, but here it is. Enjoy!
GROWING PLANTS by A.J. Crowley (Plants Person) Let’s clear something up straight away. Plants are not stupid. They know when you’ve bought them because they “looked easy.” First rule: talk to them. Not the simpering nonsense you see people do in garden centres. Be honest. Plants appreciate honesty. Tell them the fern next door is slacking and will be compost by Tuesday if it doesn’t get its act together. Healthy competition never hurt anyone worth growing. Second: confidence is key. If you water a plant while thinking please don’t die, it will. Water like you expect results. Plants respond beautifully to authority. Third: neglect is not a strategy. You probably read somewhere that succulents “like being ignored.” That doesn’t mean abandoned on a windowsill like an afterthought. Ignore them deliberately. There’s a difference. Finally, remember this: If your plants aren’t thriving, it’s not because they’re difficult. It’s because they’re disappointed in you. Until next time, -Crowley
