A Lancashire legend, I am very grateful to David Lloyd for writing the foreword to my upcoming book Stars on Sunday, the history of the John Player League.
He was the 1st Lancs player to pass 4,000 runs in the JPL (4,[email protected]) and no one skippered them more times.

On this day in 1982, a John Player Sunday League fixture produced 600 runs for the first time. Essex posted 299/4 at Colchester, thanks to a glorious 156* from Ken McEwan (98 in boundaries). He took 24 from the final over, as bowler Anton was taken for a competition record 85 runs from his 8 overs.
