I started saying "improvise, adapt, overcome" when I make a big mistake. Feels much better than "oh no oh no oh no"

If you see me like this, I'm fine. I'm being creative. I'm writing. I just need to be dramatic about it first.

Hell yeah 💜
Early christmas gift for myself.
This year I’ve been really involved with Vtm (Chicago setting in particular) and this ties everything together so nicely. Will show entire game room setup once it’s finished.

A piece I made about a week ago for an invoicery firm I’ve used a lot. The brief was ’freelance life’ and I went for a blend of authentic and fantastical.

Also, congratulations everyone who made something this year. A comic, a song, a film, a novel, a painting, a poem, a short story, a sculpture, crochet, embroidery, whatever it is. In this era of slop and theft, if you *make* something you are a shining jewel and I am so grateful for you.

Share your knowledge if/when you can. Teaching other people how to do what you do doesn’t lessen your art - it just means more and better art for everyone.

I appreciate when people are willing to tell me about their brushes, how they study, etc… I want to put that back out into the world.

this is true for all mediums! books, games, ttrpgs, comics, etc. Leave reviews where you can - and tell a friend you think might enjoy it about the thing!

I don't always trust reviews by strangers, but I sure do trust recommendations by people who know me well.
"I can't afford to support my favorite author right now, I—"

Reviews.

Reviews are free AND they are a gift to authors that can keep on giving (i.e., exposure, marketing, algo boosts, etc.)

Please, give the gift of reviews to your authors this holiday season. It really can make a difference!

Hey, whether you did hundreds of artworks this year or one artwork this year, you are an artist, and you're doing your best. Be proud of whatever you created this year. Life ebbs and flows.

I'm only in my 50s, but I'm trans/nonbinary. Didn't even know that was an option until my 40s!
Something I'd like to address. There's this idea that TQ+ folk are all 21 year-old art students... and all the 'normal' old school folk are LGB and entirely left behind and confused by 'pronouns'...

Every talk I give, know who the most outspoken trans allies are? Queer folk in their 70s!!

Art is wild because you'll be stuck working on the same part over and over for hours and then you make one random extremely frustrated line and you'll be like "... wait... 👀" and it'll fix everything.

I’ve sometimes fallen into the trap of thinking that complementing a creative person for their work is less sophisticated or desired than discussion or debate about it but very often the best thing you can say to them is hell yeah and that doesn’t make you dumb it just makes you nice

The most precious commodity you have is your attention. You don’t have to waste it on poor-faith debates or arguments with strangers if you don’t think they’ll be productive. You can prioritize the things that matter to you and make your life richer.

So, real talk. The imposter syndrome never really goes away either, it's like an old chronic injury that flares up again and gets really bad at certain times of the year, or if you've strained yourself. It creeps back when you don't expect it, and it's hard not to hear that little voice get louder.
Remember your favorite creator possibly might be struggling with imposter syndrome and doubt and this timeline sucks.. so if you find yourself thinking “wow I really relate to this persons work” or that persons work gives you joy, you should probably tell them. It’s a hard time to be a creative.
